Did you know that if Kerry and Bush tie in the EC, Illinois goes to Bush?
Yep, Under Article II., Section 1., Clause 3. and Amendment XII., if there is nobody with a majority of the electors, the election goes to the House of Representatives where each state gets a single vote.

Under the current makeup of the Illinois Representation in the House, this means George W. Bush would win.

Why, when so much of Illinois is Democratic, would this happen? The answer is simple, Reapportionment. We have nineteen Representatives and ten of those are Republican currently.

There's nothing we can do to change things this year, but we can go a long way to changing things for the 2008 election. We have a Republican Senate candidate who is turning off the moderate wing of the Illinois Republican Party and is firing up the base of the Democratic Party! Every Democrat I know cannot wait to vote FOR Barak Obama while voting AGAINST Alan Keyes in the same move. This means the Republican vote could be extremely diluted in Illinois this year and opens up the opportunity to put some Republican Representatives out of a job.

Wouldn't you love to help give some Republican members of the house, like Henry Hyde, a pink slip? How deliciously karmic for the latest people to suffer from a Bush economy to be his rubber stamps in the House!

You can help. Spread the word about the people whom I'll be posting information about in replies to this post. We have a chance to take many seats from Illinois. Let's work to give Kerry and Edwards a DEMOCRATIC HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES!!!

4. We can possibly flip IL-15, if progressives will help us do so!
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 06:37 AM by Padraig18
We have the best candidate we've had in a long time, Dr. David Gill, a 44 year-old emergency-room physician from Clinton. Dr. Gill needs H-E-L-P, both financial and otherwise, to unsat the neo-con Bush* ass-kisser who currently holds the seat, Rep. Tim "Atilla, the Ferret Face" Johnson.

Please help Dr. Gill. Thank you!

5. There is much more to this though
IL, like the other states get one vote in such a scenario, sO IL in and of itself is less inmportant than interms of its normal elector count. Additonally, If IL wne t overwhelmingly Dem, They GOP would spiral furthe rout of existance in that ste because people would be PISSED.

Finally the new congress, would not make the vote, the current one would.

6. Correct, which is why I said we can't change it this year
But we CAN make a difference for the future. As is always the case in Politics, it can take years to get meaningful change.

9. But we need to insure we can correct this for future elections
Hence the need to get Democrats elected to the House during a year when we very well could take several seats!

19. OK, so I have to ask...
what happens in states where it is tied like Texas (not that I think it will be tied after the election thanks to Delay's rigging the elections there)? What happens if the House vote ends up tied 25-25? Just curious.

20. There will be no vote from that state
Bush would still win this year, however, because he'd get 31 states.

There are currently 5 tied states. 14 are Democratic.

18. Dr. Tari Renner! up against longtime rep Jerry Weller. District 11
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 11:38 AM by in_cog_ni_to
I just signed up to go to a Renner Meetup. He's running against Jerry Weller who been a rep FOREVER.

Yesterday I told another lady Dem about the Renner campaign and she "said" she would go to his web site and sign up to help. It would be so SWEET to send Weller packing and "I" will do what I can to help him on his way.

on edit....Here's a link to his site and it's District 11. :hi:

24. Actually, pretty good.
Her race was one of the early ones targeted for exposure by Dean.

She's raising a lot of money. If Keyes fatigue coupled with a certain Bush loss in Illinois results in moderate Republicans being discouraged, enough of the Republican vote could be diluted to allow her to win, especially if hard core Dems get out the vote!

29. The House chooses the President... but it is done with the newly elected
House and not the old House. So if IL elects one more D this year, IL would go to Kerry.

That said, R's control something like 32 or 35 states so Bush wins if it is a tie.
