We all remember Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December 2007

Can you imagine if Obama was impossibly behind in the delegate race and uttered the above words? I would think (hope) most Obama supporters would be outraged at raising the spectre of the assassination of a female leader contending for high political office.

There was no reason to say these words other than to draw a comparison between two charismatic, likely nominees. What the hell was she thinking?

1. Don't you mean Clinton Supporters in your second sentence?
I think it's fair to say, all Obama supporters are outraged.

5. Sorry... I mean
What I meant was that if the tables were turned, we'd be outraged at our own candidate for saying this. :(

2. "Senator Obama, considering that Hillary has more SDs than you do, why don't you drop out?"
Obama: Well, anything can happen. You know, no one could have predicted my win in Iowa and Benazir Bhutto was assassinated last December so I think it's all still up in the air.

3. The only plausible explanation I've heard is that
she was referring to the other thing happening that day--RFK accepting the nomination. So, supposedly she was saying "That campaign lasted until June, as did my husband's."

However, the only reason for her to refer to the OTHER event of the day, rather than the one relevant to her point, was to cast a cloud of assassination over Obama's candidacy. Although some here think she was actually appealing to racists to kill him, I think she was doing a Rovian trick to raise fears among black voters.

4. You make an excellent point. But then, Obama's appeal is in part based on being too classy for that.
What's ironic is that Clinton's rationale for staying in was always that Obama could screw up somehow. You know, he might make some stupid gaffe or something.

One tiny nitpick: Bobby was not the "likely nominee" in 1968. Because of the boss-controlled caucus system then prevalent, Humphrey was far more likely to get it, even had that tragedy not taken Bobby out of the race. The other irony for us Obama supporters is that Kennedy's strategy then was closer to Clinton's now: despite the actual number of delegates, Kennedy's case was based on the fact that he had the big momentum going into the final weeks of the contest.
