Would VP Bloomberg tilt Florida for Obama?
There has been occasional speculation about an Obama-Bloomberg ticket. One criticism of it was that Obama would get New York regardless, so Bloomberg doesn't help deliver a big state in which Obama could use help. But with all the reporting lately about Obama's difficulties in Florida and in particular with its large Jewish population, maybe Bloomberg could make the difference. Apart from that, Bloomberg does bring strong economic credentials to the ticket, probably stronger than anyone McCain might pick, along with the "executive experience" some people feel Obama should be looking for. And he has mainstream/centrist appeal for those who are worried that Obama may be too liberal. Seems like a potentially good match to me.

10. But...
Isn't part of Obama's message to end partisanship?

(Also, Bloomberg could be a once-and-future Democrat)

It would also be an interesting counter to the possibility of McCain-Lieberman...

12. I don't remember ever hearing that.
Nothing would be more stupid and arrogant than in a Democratic year, picking a Republican and your running mate.

but not by me.

Mayor Bloomberg's green initiatives alone shows some merit. He's not perfect, but he walks the talk...

Green initiatives including transforming the NYC taxi system to hybrids.

I might be naive too, but I don't think he's worth all that vitriol...

Michael Bloomberg isn't.

Is opening swimming pools and doing Eagles Coverage.

I voted for Casey in 2002. It worked out though

Casey ended up a Senator and he'll be in the Senate long after Rendell has retired from the Govenor's mansion.

7. No, Bloomberg is not a good choice for Obama. Obama is competitve in FL without him
and FL isn't the end all. We spend too much time worrying about Florida which with it's GOP governor is still likely to go to the Republicans anyway.

8. Bloomberg will help get the billionaire vote.
Other than that, I don't see much point. He is very much a 'top-down' style mayor--the opposite of Obama's bottom-up, people power style. He is popular in the sense that everyone says he's "much better than Guilliani" . . . but that's not really an unusual trait. About 99.99999999% of the world's people are much better than Mr. Ghoul. He's also a very poor politician, has gotten group after group angry at him, and has failed to pass most of his most recent pet projects (all of which, true to his style, basically had a constituency of one (him)).

Among other things, his father prosecuted Nazi war criminals.

I like Bloomberg but his enormous wealth would be a huge and ongoing distraction, similar to having Hillary and Bill as VP. With his wealth and position Bloomberg never has to sit second chair and may not even be capable of quietly hovering in somebody else's shadow. I also think he's big on globalization/free trade but I could be wrong.

On the other hand, the business world would likely be very pleased with Bloomberg on the ticket, but that's not about Florida...

13. Bloomberg would enjoy some support along the southeast coast and
perhaps more modest number along the Rt. 4 corridor, but I'm not sure it would be a big plus for Obama up in the Panhandle.

Bill Nelson is about as liberal as it gets from that part of Florida.

20. Two points
1) This is a board for progressives. We work to elect progressive candidates.

2) Obama will get all of the states he needs regardless of who his running mate is.
