An interesting election perspective from Slate. Personally I hate Costco, but I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart either (more of a Target person)

This is the era of hyper-polarization. Or so David Brooks tells us. We've got red-state and blue-state news channels, films, books, even musicians. Now we've also got red-state, blue-state discount retailers.

1. Why do you hate Costco?
They pay well, they provide great benefits - people LOVE working there.

Plus top execs are all bigtime Democratic donors.

2. Costco beats Sam's Club in my town
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 10:01 AM by LiberalEsto
Here in Gaithersburg, Maryland, we have a Costco and a Sam's Club (owned by Wal-Mart) practically across the road from one another.
The Sam's Club parking lots are almost always more than half empty. By contrast, it's hard to get into the Costco lot because of all the cars.
I'd say here in Blue-state Maryland, Costco's winning by a huge margin.

3. Thanks
We are just having a new Costco opens. I am ready to burn my Sam's Club Card. I rarely shop there, but I love the big warehouse. Costco here I come.

5. By all means try it!
And NO I am not a Costco spokesperson or employee lol

I had a Sams Club membership years ago and I hated Sam's club.

IMO there is no comparison... Sam's sucks.

4. Costco has great products
Seriously...the savings on many of their food items cannot be beat and the quality of their steaks and meats are better than anything you can buy at a meat market (or supermarket) for the same price.

BTW Cat owners... the Kirkland brand catfood I am convinced is Science Diet under the Kirland brand name (and at around eight bucks for a huge bag the price is right)

I hate GOING to Costco because I can never get out of the place for under 150 bucks, but it does save money!

I was delighted to find that the politics of the company happen to coincide with my own beliefs!

20. agree about the cat food!
i have six cats, two at a time of which will puke anything else they are fed, not to mention the urinary tract infections the males have suffered while being fed other types of food. i too think that the kirkland brand is something vet office quality, cause all six do great on it. my cats range in age from 6-14, and i have been feeding them kirkland for about 5 years now.

i feel good shopping at costco knowing it is a dem supoorter company, and as someone mentioned on another post, they treat their employees well. all in all, good corporate citizens.

one complaint: what happened to the garlic portobello burgers? i am hooked on them and can't find them anymore! i hate when they discontinue my favorite stuff.

I can't make head or tail out of what you are saying. Could you please make an attempt to state it more clearly?

Are you attacking Hillary? Defending Wal-Mart? vice-versa? Something else? Please explain - this is not a competition to see how few words you can type.

Hillary Clinton served on the Wal-Mart board during the Sam Walton era.

There were some pretty rotten aspects of Sam Walton's reign, but he was a hard-core "Made in the USA" guy. Tried to shy away from imports whenever possible (which now would be near impossible).

Still an asshole when it came to unions. But at least he had at least a trace of integrity.

His kids have just made that company beyond evil. In fact, they go out of their way to be as vile as possible.

Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 04:13 PM by ArkDem
has been on the Wal Mart board. Are you saying that board memberships in Arkansas based corporations are part of being married to the governor in our fair state? I know that I am but a humble rural person so please do educate me. I can tell you this about Hillary, she would not appreciate you or any other person saying that she got a job for any other reason than her own qualifications for that job.

21. I don't think you understand how most corporate boards work
I'll bet Walmart during the 80s had a smaller board than it has now, and that it was comprised of mostly local people. Active Governors' wives are often on several boards of corporations and charities.

9. I used to hate them too
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 10:41 AM by OnionPatch
until I found out they are Democrats and treat their employees well. There is even an article somewhere that the CEO talks about how it benefits the whole company to treat employees well and that he would never consider outsourcing any of their office jobs. Now I happily shop there all the time. Oh, and I just put an article in our local Dem club newsletter to let people know that Costco = Dems and Sam's = GOP. I bet most of them will cut up their Sam's cards too. Maybe it's polarization, but when it comes to big business, the ethical ones are few and far between and I feel an obligation to make an effort to support them.

26. Welcome to buying in bulk!
It is amazing how Costco has spread across the country. For a while it was a Washington State thing that spread to other western states like New Mexico and California. I always knew they treated their employees well because their employees told me they did. I figured they had to be liberal since they come from Kirkland, WA which is next to liberal Seattle. Plus there are times you can find products I can only get at health food stores or my local food co-op. I figured there had to be an old hippie or two somewhere in purchasing! ;-) :hippie:

22. I like Target, too and hope they are not
bush people..

They say they give $2 Million a week for educational facillities around the Country.

I'm going to be moving to Hawaii in a couple of years and wish they had one out there, but they don't..maybe someday.

I have no use to shop at costco ..but glad they are for Kerry. Which makes them smart People, imv.

25. All the Walmart/Sam's Club workers in my town are salivating
at the thought of Costco opening in our area. I shop there frequently when I am in California. Baby products, baby furniture, formula... this place was my salvation when I first had my baby. The prices were extremely reasonable, and (in contrast to Walmart) there are workers available TO HELP YOU FIND WHAT YOU NEED!

The Republicans hate Costco and its chair because they say Costco pays its workers too much. $10/hr to start for a PT CASHIER!

That's reason enough for me to shop there.
