Which newspapers are likely to endorse Kerry? Bush?
I'm sure the San Francisco Examiner, the San Jose Mercury News, and the LA Times will endorse Kerry.

San Diego's papers (don't remember their names, don't read 'em) will probably go with Bush.

2. I thought the L. A. Times policy was no
endorsements. I remember they didn't endorse anyone in 2000.

In CT I don't know. The Hartford Courant tends to favor Bush more than the New London Day. My guess is the Courant will go for Bush and the Day for Kerry.

4. Chicago Tribune may endorse Kerry.
Although a nominally conservative paper, the Trib has been fairtly critical of Bush*, especially as regards his conduct of the war in Iraq and his fiscal policies; for that reason, they may well endorse Kerry. They do actually endorse Democrats on a regular basis.

5. They endorsed Bush in 2000
But I have noticed that they have been more crititical lately.

My gut tells me they'll probably endorse him in the end.

10. I can't remember the last time the Tribune endorsed a Democrat.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 02:19 PM by terrya
I hope you're right, Paddy, but I think the Tribune will endorse Bush again. They've endorsed Republicans as long as I can remember. It's a pretty safe bet that the Trib will endorse Obama for the Senate, though.

25. I believe they endorsed Clinton in 1996.
I could be wrong, however, since I was only 13 and not as deeply into politics as I am now.

12. Doesn't Conrad Black own that paper?
I seen to recall the Chicago Tribune recommending that Clinton resign, and then they reversed themselves.

8. The Economist
Not a newspaper, I know - a British weekly. It leans conservative, especially on fiscal, trade, and other economic issues and it was very pro-Iraq War. I disagree with them a lot, but I'll admit I enjoy reading it - it's a much more balanced and informative weekly than others and FAR more intelligent. Moreover, they admit their own biases, instead of pretending to be unaffiliated.

In the last election, they endorsed Bush and a Democratic Congress, but they endorsed Clinton twice, and I remember that their endorsement of Bush was more tentative - they seemed to buy that he was basically a centrist and they liked that he seemed more center-right on the economy, which is what they prefer.

However, I don't know who they'll go with this time. Although they haven't been enamored of Kerry, they've written some good positive articles on him even if they're often critical. And they've been extremely critical of Bush on many issues - notably taxation, budgets, handling of the Iraq War (incl. calling on Rumsfeld to resign). They've written a number of articles where they slur Bush as a "big-government conservative." They've also been EXTREMELY critical of Bush on civil liberties, military tribunals, and gay marriage (which they endorsed).

So I think they'll endorse Kerry, even if they're not so anti-Bush as the rest of us.

9. Also, NY Times will Endorse Kerry
No question about it. Despite people's annoyance on this site with it and Judith Miller's Iraq cheerleading, they do endorse the Democrat almost every time, and their editorial page has been quite critical of Bush.

As for the Washington Post, honestly, I don't know. I think it's very possible they'll go with Bush.

13. The Capital Times of Madison, Wisconsin will endorse Kerry
The Wisconsin State Journal of Madison, Wi will endorse Bush. Even their newspage indicates this. A front page story headlines in the State Journal:

"FED SAYS ECONOMY POISED TO EXPAND" but the story is really about the hike in interest rates.

They always endorse the Repug. But, they will do so holding their nose. They know he's a miserable failure, but when your business is in the heart of Freeper country, you gotta go with the flow.

Maybe the Atlanta Constitution will go Kerry? Any Georgians out there?
