well, mostly. Now, Jim Rasmussen, the man who Kerry pulled out of the water, his version very much matches Kerry's. In fact, just about everyone on that boat can corroborate it. The group calling themselves Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, these guys were in Vietnam at the same time. In fact, some of them were patrolling the river that very day John Kerry performed the actions they now dispute. They claim there was no fire from the banks that day. Now, is it possible that somebody's memory is a little altered by time? After all, for those other guys on the river, how was this day different than any other? But for Kerry and his boatmates, especially Rasmussen, this day was very significant indeed. And the military records on JohnKerry.com would seem to back up this version.
I think that many in the group calling themselves Vietnam Veterans for Truth are angry at John Kerry because he spoke out and criticized the war. I don't necessarily blame them for their anger, John Kerry said some very inflammatory things in the 1970's, but he himself was very angry when he came back.
In fact, George Elliot, one of the group now condemning Kerry praised him in 1969 "his bearing and appearance are above reproach"
Elliot praised Kerry again in 1996: "The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is not something not to be looked down upon but it was an act of courage. And the whole outfit served with honor..."here was no question that it was above and beyond anything that we had seen down there in that case at that time frame...It just so happened that this one was so outstanding that the Silver Star was eventually awarded."
