Poll question: Do you believe in America?
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 01:57 PM by Feanorcurufinwe

Do you believe Americans will fulfill their role in their democracy?

Do you believe Americans (with our help) care enough about the truth to see through the media spin?

Do you believe Americans will choose hope over fear?

Do you believe Americans will elect John Kerry?

1. I'd like to...
but I'm not sure. I DO, however, believe in Democrats to get their asses to the ballot box this November in a big way.

3. If you asked me this before the Dem convention, I'd say no
Clinton started me feeling good about this, Gore carried that forward.

Barack Obama shined hope into my heart, John Edwards brought that hope to life.

John Kerry restored my belief in America when he took the stage.

It's been a long four years. For the first time in a long time, I believe.

5. Exactly
I was rabidly ABB going into the convention, I was bitter, I was angry, and I was disillusioned, I didn't even realize how much hope I had lost!

I watched almost the entire convention on C-Span...was a tiring week with working full time and a 20 month old daughter to take care of!

I got more and more excited with each passing day. I felt validated! I felt hope!

It was wonderful to feel hope again and to feel a bit of lightness in the dread and doom that has been consuming since Bush took office!

It made me feel proud to finally be able to truly say I was voting FOR something.

7. No, but I believe in human-kind.
That's why I'm a Progressive. It has little to do with America.

10. the idea of america is not the land, but the idea of personal freedom
don't confuse the denotation with the connotation.

nations rise, nations fall, today "america" is the word masking the idea of freedom, tomorrow it will have another mask, another nation that provides hope.

if the idea of freedom lives on, so does america.

11. No. But I believe we'll elect Kerry.
They came and killed the "indians". And then they polluted the land.
No. I don't believe in America. There are good people here. And the idea is a good one. But that's a rotten way to do business.

14. Well, I think America exists, if that's what you mean.....
Otherwise, this faith-based rhetoric bordering on jingoism is not helpful to policy discussions

15. jingoism?
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 09:01 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
Main Entry: jin-go-ism
Pronunciation: 'ji-(")gO-"i-z&m
Function: noun
: extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy
http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=jingoism

Please explain how my post bordered on 'extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy'.

I also take issue with your assertion that there was no inherent policy discussion in my post. I think the policies of Bush are the policies driven by fear, and the use of fear. And I believe Kerry's policies are based on the hope and - if you insist - the faith that we can make the world a better place. I do see a choice between hope and fear.

Nevertheless, you are welcome to believe that my rhetoric is 'not helpful'.
