11. The point people are trying to make
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 04:15 PM by depakote_kid
is that Kerry is following a losing "strategy" of non-responding and giving Bush a pass. To my knowledge, no one has come out and explained why it will work this time when it's failed so often in the past...

14. the point is he ISN'T following a strategy of non responding
the people make claims that are not true. this poster of the thread said the kerry campaign should follow lautenberg. but the lautenberg words came FROM THE KERRY CAMPAIGN. he is part of the campaign and they are working together.

18. I hope you're right
but thus far, the evidence is that non-responding HAS been the modus operandi. If this signals a change, that's welcome news- but I'm not convinced. I've seen this from people like Tad Devine too many times.

23. And the other point - KERRY IS NOT LOSING
He is ahead in national polls, and ahead in the swing states. He's even ahead in states that went for Bush* in 2000.

31. Dukakis wasn't losing either
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 05:31 PM by depakote_kid
in fact, he had a much larger lead at this point, 18 points, as i recall, and theough his non-responding, he let it all slip away.

Cite me all the instances you want- they don't mean shit if they're not getting out there- if perceptions are being formed in people's minds- which they are. The same exact process was at play and worked effectively against Gore in 2000.

The Kerry voted for 300 some odd tax increases- the flip flopper thing- those stuck. Why? because Kerry's camp didn't adequately respond to them in kind and in time. Even his service record is coming under attack, which is absurd- but at least that one is receiving some derision- from Kerry's surrogates.

The good news is that there's still time to mount a more aggressive campaign- the bad news is that it looks like there's a sort of group think in the Kerry camp that seems to have difficulty recognizing that lies, distortions and labels have a history of working...

And despite what I hear from all of the apologists, there's little justification for believing that they won't work again.

The dynamics of the race- the process- is the same. Gore shouldn't have even been in a position to have had the election stolen- and wouldn't have been, had he not allowed the media to form and reinforce false and misleading public perceptions.

No. I said that this type of "strategy" has failed before, resulting in at least one presidential candidate losing a commanding lead- and eventually the election.

38. No candidate has been in this good position at this point in the election
against an incumbent. Especially a 'war president'. Methinks you protest too much.

What really gets me is the view that Bush is running a more effective campaign with the insults and lies. I don't see it. It doesn't comport with my notion of what's important to the American voter. I think that Kerry's focus on jobs and the economy this week will generate more support than Bush and Cheney's snarky one liners.

40. Like i said I hope you're right
Unfortunately, it hasn't played out that way in prior elections. Repeating distortions and deception is effective- look how many people still believe Cheney's lies about Iraq/Al Qaeda/9-11.

The only way to dispel this sort propaganda is to meet it head on, repeatedly, before it becomes ingrained in public perception.

Today, Cheney Was Quick To Criticize Kerry's "Deeply Held Convictions" But He Has Failed To Explain Why He Has Taken Positions On Both Sides of Key Issues.

Kerry spokesman Phil Singer: "Dick Cheney is out of credibility and is representing a campaign that is so desperate it will say anything to distract attention from a record that has made the country less safe and secure. The fact is that George Bush has overseen an economy that has lost a million jobs, seen deficits hit record highs and watched health care and other household expenses hit new heights. John Kerry knows we can do better and has a plan to make America stronger at home and respected in the world."

Kerry Campaign: Deeply Held Convictions - The Cheney Flip-Flops

To: National Desk, Political Reporter

Contact: Chad Clanton or Phil Singer, 202-464-2800, both of Kerry-Edwards 2004; Web: http://www.johnkerry.com

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following was released by Kerry-Edwards 2004:

10. Great response, but 2 days IS too long..
They should have information like this ready to go at any given moment. Just because they are trying to take the high road doesn't mean they shouldn't be ready to attack back immediately when they are attacked (which will be often the closer we get to election, and the more Kerry continues to lead at the polls). This was how Clinton was so successful running against Bush Sr. in '92. The Bushies are always dirty campaigners and Clinton just fed it right back to them in a way no one else ever had, or has since.

12. What are you talking about?
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 04:04 PM by bigtree
The date of the release is yesterday. There is another response today. The Kerry team was ahead of Cheney. I don't know how they could do better. What a crock to claim that they weren't on top of this. THEY DID RESPOND IMMEDIATELY!

DID YOU NOT WAIT TO HEAR KERRY'S IMMEDIATE RESPONSE ABOUT bUSH'S ARROGANCE?

27. Yes, you made the mistake, but it's "the media's" fault
for not publicizing. I guess you publicized it, right? Even though you didn't even KNOW about it, right? Even though it was right on Kerry's website, right? It's the media's fault you didn't look on Kerry's website, right?

29. Relax and chill a bit dude (or dudette)...
I'm on your side. Most Americans aren't aware of what's on Kerry's website unless the Media calls attention to it. I'm agreeing with your original point now. I'm only saying that it's unfortunate I wasn't aware of his response because I don't check his website every day. I shouldn't have to. The average voter is only hearing Bush's attacks and not Kerry's responses. That's the point I'm making.

30. You're right about one thing - You shouldn't have to
Unfortunately, in times like these, you DO "have to" because the media isn't.

The average voter is only hearing Bush's attacks and not Kerry's responses. That's the point I'm making.

And my point is that YOU have the power to change that.

20. The point is that he's not getting his message out!
therefore, he's NOT RESPONDING.

Whining and complaining about the media doesn't change that fact. Issuing press releases or making a few statements on the stump isn't going to work if hadly anyone hears it.

28. The point is that YOU'RE not getting his message out
You just blame everyone but yourself.

Not your job, right?

Whining and complaining about the media doesn't change that fact. Issuing press releases or making a few statements on the stump isn't going to work if hadly anyone hears it.

So you whine and complain about that on DU, instead of going out and spreading the news?

19. None. And the people who have won the campaigns in my state
are republican. But that doesn't mean that I as a citizen and a democrat and a member of a discussion forum cannot have an opinion. We are in this war because the people on the democratic side who ran and won elections did not do their job very well and we the people kept our mouths shut.

21. So your opinion is uninformed. Certainly you have a right
to state your opinion, just as I have a right to point out that it is uninformed and without apparent value.

I have another question for you. Why raise this phony strawman issue of your right to an opinion when no one has said or implied that you don't have a right to your opinion? Just wondering.

37. You are acting like a republican. I see you have learned something from
somebody.

And value is in the eye of the beholder. But you don't have to put people down to feel superior. You did not only imply but state that I did not have a right to an opinion when you asked me to go to the poll that you so thoughtfully had created yourself.

And I really don't feel that I need to share my "uninformed and without apparent value" opinions with you, since all your statements, according to your infallible authority are totally informed. I didn't know that you had been crowned the total and final arbiter of everybody's thoughts and opinions. When I am notified of that fact I will bow to you and be forever in awe of your powerful statements.
