Is Novak Warning Bush?: "Bush's uncertain trumpet"
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/12/bush.trumpet/index.html

<snip>
To appreciate the political impact of only a 32,000-job increase, compare the morale of the two political camps. When John Edwards was caught on camera this week telling supporters "we're going to win, we're going to win," he was voicing a now familiar Democratic mantra. No such confidence is exuded by Republicans. In private, doubt is constantly expressed about the outcome on Nov. 2.

<snip>
Since the disloyal Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and the super-loyal National Economic Director Lawrence Lindsey were sacked in December 2002, there has been mainly silence from their successors.

The result has been inordinate political dependence on whether the BLS is dispensing good news or bad news.

This White House's inclination to stand pat on all policies except the war against terror is viewed by increasingly fretful Republicans as the passport to another one-term Bush presidency.

George W. Bush has about two weeks to begin changing.

3. He's referencing the time before the RNC convention
I think he's wrong about Bush doing nothing though. He's done a lot...and none of it's good.

2. If Bush calls for major tax reform such as a flat tax or elimination
of the IRS, you can be sure that they are VERY desperate.

5. He's pushing the agenda to get rid of Social Security again
Listen carefully...own a home, own this, own that, own their retirement...

I can't see the flat tax flying, but he's been pushing getting rid of SS for quite a while. Dumb dumb dumb idea.

11. Actually, might be a good move.... get the seniors riled, including the RW
and *MAYBE* they'd wake up to what this clown is *really* about.

He just needs to be prodded to stop hinting, and say it LOUD AND PROUD.

And watch the seniors come after him with pitchforks. :evilgrin:

8. Under increasing pressure from John Kerry and trailing in the polls,
an upbeat President Bush delivered the speech of his life tonight at the Republican National Convention.

Highlighting his success in the war on terror, proudly trumpeting the invasion of Iraq, and outlining a new plan to "Reduce the tax burden of the American people, and release the job-creating power of the great American economy," the president staked his claim to four more years in office.

Reaction to the president's speech was mixed among analysts. Tucker Carlson, political analyst for CNN, said, "He hit this one out of the park. He's the underdog, dealing with a surging John Kerry, but he didn't let that interfere with his ability to articulate a message of confidence and optimism, which is what you would expect from someone who has provided such steady leadership over the past four years."

Robert Novak, on the other hand, was more critical. "With all the pressure on him, I thought he did a fantastic job," Novak said while wiping away some of the spittle from his chin. "That French looking guy is still the favorite, but here you have a wartime president working to protect our country from the terrorist threat, while running a re-election campaign at the same time. He was really awesome." James Carville, liberal analyst, said, "I got no use for this guy," while MSNBC's Chris Matthews was heard to gush, "Have you seen the President in tight jeans? He looks awesome!"

It is unclear at this point what effect the upbeat, sunny President's impressive job on this speech will have on polls, but with so much riding on this speech and this convention, the wartime underdog President certainly did his part tonight.

12. Oh, dear sweet Jesus in a Safeway cart
please, oh please let the repugs bring up privatizing Social Security. I would love nothing better than to whip out my retirement account to anyone who asks and show them the 12/31/00 balance and the 3/31/04 balance.

13. Does that mean
that you would like to see it privatized?

14. nooo...
what i mean is the beating that we all took when the stock market tanked. the privitazation talks came about when the stock market was going full bull... then the bottom fell out and everyone's retirement dried up overnight. shaked the confidence in stock market based social security. shrubya tries to pull off the privatization thing now, not only seniors are going to want to shoot it down, but many of us 15 years or so away from retirement trying to recoup our losses. it will not be a good thing for bush. course the neo-cons will love it.

16. *wipes forehead* Couldn't tell there for a minute
Personally, I think privatizing would be disastrous. Bush talks about the "young people" being in charge of their retirement. Stupid, dumb, whacked idea. How many 22-30 year olds do you know that are thinking about their retirement? A condo/house, yes. Filling that condo/house, definitely. New car, dog, jacuzzi. Anything, but retirement. I was no different. If I would have had the option for the SS money in my paycheck, it would have been spent for any number of things. Unfortunately, one of them would not have been my retirement.
