I agree with a poster on You Tube, Hollywood can keep Simon, give me Chuck Barris, and Gene Gene

9. I know! I tried to explain it to my son and he
just didn't, and doesn't, get it. Which is truly ironic, because he's just a teenager but he loves disco, Saturday Night Fever, and 70's music.

That was one of the highlights of my late elementary and junior high school years, coming home from school and watching the Gong Show. I think Rex Reed was the 70's version of Simon Cowell.

8. That's one of the few reasons to watch complete "Gong Shows".
In the 70s, when that music and then the freakout by Barris and then Gene came on, all of us kids just went apeshit. We threw every single thing we could find at the TV - pillows, couch parts, stuffed animals, old toys, empty boxes . .. you name it. That guy was the two-minute king of our world.

The Gong Show - the ultimate in reality TV. GOD I love stoned 70s television.

15. I'd have figured you for more of a fan of 50's/60's tv.
Seeing as how you are Hugh Beaumont.

13. Lacking in imagination?
I grew up with The Gong Show. The Gong Show was a favorite of mine. And you, American Idol, are no Gong Show.

14. well i'll grant you the gong show was better, more entertaining.
but then, sequels and reprises are rarely as good as the original.

interesting how the smaller the budget, the greater the creativity....

16. The Gong Show was a cultural phenomenom...
I was in 6th Grade when it premiered (in syndication, no less). In no time, every school had it's own version of it (parents' night assemblies, etc...). My act was dancing a bird puppet to "In the Mood." I got gonged.:(:D
