GOP Priest Mocks Obama Last Night At NY State Republican Party Dinner

GOP priest attacks Obama in invocation

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0508/GOP_priest_attacks_Obama_in_invocation.html

Here's the video of the invocation at the New York State Republican Party dinner last night (go to link), delivered to a crowd including Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Peter King, and where Dick Cheney later spoke.

In it, the priest, Monsignor Jim Lisante mockingly asks God to change Obama's mind and volunteers to replace Rev. Jeremiah Wright as Obama's pastor.

"One more thing, Lord. Please tell Senator Obama that maybe change is a good thing and maybe he should think about changing his favorite preacher," he said, to applause.

"I know a lot more of us would be comfortable with his judgment skills if he hadn’t sat for 20 years through those words offered by his preacher of division, bigotry, and – honestly – half truths without a word of objection from Senator until the media brought it up, and now he doesn’t want any part of the guy," he said.

"I’m willing to be his new preacher."

This isn't Lisante's first partisan invocation. He got attention for a prayerful attack on Eliot Spitzer a couple of years ago, which he jokes in the video above was "prophetic."

(Video from The Politicker's YouTube account, though it's not yet on their site.)

1. Sorry, that doesn't count - it didn't happen in a black church.

5. It didn't happen in church
at all.....As much as I agree that Senator Obama had nothing to do with this flap...black church, white church....Church is not the place for that . If the priest in question had said exactly the same thing at a political event, or actually almost ANYWHERE other than in a church during a church service....The RW would not even have noticed it.

8. Or course I was being sarcastic, but I don't think it's up to...
...white people to decide what should be talked about in a black church ~ for so many years, church was pretty much the only safe place for blacks to discuss civil rights.

14. That was not a
"discussion of civil rights."

We discuss that in my church as well. By vote, we also discuss gay rights. We are a "reconciling congregation", meaning that we have made a statement to GLBT that they are welcome with us at any time, and we will love and accept them for who they are, not who they are not.

My church is in a "white" community, and yet, as far back as 1915, long before it was safe or even acceptable to do so, (I'm sure you will agree) , it was the only place for many miles around that would give Booker T. Washington a speaking platform. One of our pastors, now retired, was arrested in the 60s at a MLK civil rights march in Alabama.

I know you may think 'sounds like the old "some of my best friends" speech', but it isn't.

What this "priest" did was far beyond a discussion of civil rights, and should not have been tolerated in ANY church.

He was addressing the issue of entitlement...

...something blacks have had to deal with for their entire history in this country ~ imo it's not up to whites to say HOW the topic should be addressed in their churches. That's as silly as whites telling Native Americans how they should address issues important to them in their lodges ~ or men telling women how to do girl-talk.

3. God has not yet endorsed a candidate

To be fair, this was a political function, not a religious event. That priest, though he's quite a piece of work, has every right to express a political opinion at a political function. I have much more of an issue with clergy members who express political views at tax-exempt religious events.

That said, this guy is quite the freak. He's badmouthing Obama's religious connections standing on what McCain's ally has called the pulpit of the "great whore."

Good luck, Mr. Freako Priest, finding McCain in a church anywhere to express your opinions to him. I guess in your view, it's better to be a man of your opinions than to be a follower of Christ. I hope your bishop is proud of you.

The Atlah Ministries Pastor James David Manning has hit out at Oprah Winfrey and Creflo Dollar for mocking white women and being a "pimp"

As for how he got the name 'Atlah' Ministries (The word Atlah doesn't exist), Manning say on his Atlah Worldwide YouTube description:

"On September 14, 1991, I was home praying at my favorite place. My routine in prayer was well established; I knelt, observed the verses of the Lord's prayer as found in Matthew 6. From there as was my custom, I waited on the Holy Spirit to inspire me."

19. Oh please give it up!
Senator Obama has no control over these preachers.. and priests (not even his religion),I am sure that they will DEMAND that Senator Obama stand and do another speech on what other people say,..You have no idea how much I am beginning to resent that..

Obama has repudiated what was said..

Look at what Senator Obama has done over a long career of service from worker in the streets, to state government and then federal government..not what some minister, priest, rabbi, star gazer, goddess, priestess.. etc etc etc has to blabber about
