President's visit shuts airport in Scottsdale

Normal activity is expected to resume today

SCOTTSDALE - President Bush's visit to Phoenix on Wednesday may have fired up Republican voters, but it brought aviation to a halt for 19 hours at Scottsdale Airport.

The airport was expected to resume takeoffs and landings at 10 a.m. today after being closed by the Federal Aviation Administration since 3 p.m. Wednesday.

For the third time in less than a year, the FAA issued a temporary flight restriction over Scottsdale to accommodate visits by Bush. The most recent restriction covered a 10-mile-diameter circle centered on the Royal Palms Resort and Spa, 5200 E. Camelback Road, in northeast Phoenix, where Bush stayed Wednesday night.

The Bush-Cheney rally didn't hang out a sign saying so, but there was "no vacancy" for one highly visible campaign official.

An official of the other campaign.

Sue Walitsky, communications director for the Kerry-Edwards campaign in Arizona, said she had a valid ticket to the event at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix but was refused admittance with no explanation.

"I wanted to hear the president's speech," Walitsky said. She said she wore no Kerry button, nor did she carry any campaign paraphernalia that might have disturbed Bush backers.

If Republicans with valid tickets showed up at a Kerry rally, "we'd let them in," she said.

2. Not just in Scottsdale, either...

Last Thursday, my eldest daughter and her mother were delayed for several hours in Las Vegas, where they had a plane change on their flight from San Diego to Baltimore. How come? Their plane was coming from Sacramento, and a Chimpy appearance there kept the plane grounded in Sacramento until he had left.

As a result, their flight finally reached Baltimore at 5:00 A.M.

I hope Captain Crotchsock lost the votes of every passenger on that flight (aside from the two mentioned above, who were never going to vote for him anyway  ).

:grr:
