Keyes likens abortion to terrorism
Keyes likens abortion to terrorism

August 17, 2004

BY NATASHA KORECKI AND SCOTT FORNEK Staff Reporters

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes said Monday that women who choose to undergo abortions and the physicians who perform the procedure are essentially terrorists because "the evil is the same."

The remarks came as Keyes was explaining why three months ago he said that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were a "warning" from God to "wake up" and stop "the evil" of abortion.

"Now, you think it's a coincidence that on September 11th, 2001, we were struck by terrorists an evil that has at its heart the disregard of innocent human life?" Keyes said in a May 7 speech in Provo, Utah. "We who have for several decades killed not thousands but scores of millions of our own children, in disregard of the principle of innocent human life -- I don't think that's a coincidence, I think that's a warning.

"I don't think that's a coincidence, I think that's a shot across the bow. I think that's a way of Providence telling us, 'I love you all; I'd like to give you a chance. Wake up! Would you please wake up?' "

Try what some people do to stop abortion, thats terrorism. Not all pro lifers, I am not painting with a broad brush here but some people do resort to terrorism to prevent abortion. My point is that some people use terrorism to stop abortion, thats what I meant.

7. yeah, I hope he keeps this up
talked to a lifelong GOP guy today and he said what the heck did they bring Keyes in for, he's a carpetbagger. He said all the other GOP types he's friends with are saying the exact same. Now if that translates into voting for Obama or not, I don't know.

3. This linking of social issues to terrorism won't work.
Rick Santorum has done the same thing with gay marriage. He's referred to it as "domestic terrorism"

It's hateful and cynical as hell. It won't work for Santorum and it won't work for Keyes. It's a despicable tactic that most people will see through.

4. If Keyes wants to experience terror
let him be an unmarried, abandoned young girl who is pregnant against her will in a country where abortion is illegal and out of wedlock pregnancy still carries lifelong shame.

That's what these men want. They want women punished all their lives for having sex (with somebody other than them, of course). They want desperate women driven to charlatans who may maim or kill them. They want the emergency rooms to be full of bleeding, dying women.

How do I know this? Mr. Keyes, I was an adult before abortion was made safe and legal. I remember what antiabortion laws did to women. I lost a friend to a botched, illegal abortion. If you want terror, try hemorrhaging alone, afraid to go to a hospital because you've just tried to protect your life against the consequences of a pregnancy you never wanted, and that self defense is illegal.

Antiabortion laws will never stop abortion. They will only stop the type of abortion a women can survive, and that, Mr. Keyes, is terrifying.
