Chicago Sun-Times LTTE: Keyes re-energizes GOP
A LTTE from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Keyes re-energizes GOP

Recent editorials suggest that the Illinois Republican Party continues to lack direction (''Get serious,'' Aug, 6). To clarify at least one point, I was the central committeeman to make the motion to offer Alan Keyes the Republican Senate candidate spot.

In recent years politics in both parties has focused on personalities, not issues, principles or platforms. We cannot win a Hollywood-type beauty contest. We will win if the election focuses on values and policy. No one can better articulate Republican ideals and a proven philosophy of achieving objectives than Keyes.

The Republican platform has not changed substantively since Abraham Lincoln carried our banner in 1860. Freedom for all, opportunity, non-oppressive taxes and government, national security -- these continue to be our vanguard principles.

In contrast is a Democratic opponent who means well, constantly referring to his Kenya-Kansas roots. I lived in Kenya, learned Swahili, my son was born in Africa. I lived and trained in Kansas. No one I have ever met is ideologically further removed from the entrepreneurial/capitalist success story of Kenya or the rugged individualistic conservative ethic of Kansas than Barack Obama.

Keyes will be far better able to promote the interests of this state and nation in the U.S. Senate. The key to democracy is an informed electorate. Now we have a chance for honest discussion and debate on the issues. No, the Illinois Republican Party is not lost, only getting back to solid basics.

William C. Dam,
central committeeman,
8th Congressional District

4. My favorite line:

2. Pardon my mystical viewpoint, but...
Keyes is going nowhere but back to Maryland when this is over.

He threw his intellectually empty carpetbagging hat into the ring with Mercury retrograde. Keyes will come undone, I would bet a whole-wheat, honey-dipped doughNUT on it.

6. If by "re-energize" you mean
repel mainstream voters and lose elections in a spectacularly embarrassing fashion, then yes, that is what Alan Keyes can do for the Republican Party in IL.

7. Huh?
No one can better articulate Republican ideals and a proven philosophy of achieving objectives than Keyes.

What, the same guy with all the failed campaigns followed by a failed talk show? Exactly which objectives has he achieved?

13. I completely agree with this statement
"No one can better articulate Republican ideals"

I can only hope that the GOP holds Keyes up as a shining example of what they stand for.

10. Hey Dude-- why don't you rally some big time donations to Keyes, then!

C'mon. Convince the party to blow a whole big wad of dough on the guy. It'll be swell!

"We cannot win a hollywood-style beauty contest". Well, at least he's right about one thing.
