10. Of course, then the -itch would have sued the protestor
and won, and, of course, the woman who would support "tort reform" would have tried to get 5 million dollars for loss of abilities . . .

5. Nope
That's when you say in your sweetest voice, "You can try to shut me up, but the truth of my words clearly stings your heart." Then offer the other cheek, as well.

Nobody in the crowd around you will have the least sympathy for the assailant.

25. No sense ceding the higher ground, though
Anyone looking at that picture, and anyone standing around in the crowd can see just what's going on. By responding physically, then it becomes a physical confrontation, and everyone will choose up sides and it could get very big, ugly and out of control.

A simple response, and body language that says you're not going to meet violence with more violence puts the assailant in an untenable position. She has to back down or leave, unless she's got the intestinal fortitude to continue attacking someone who isn't resisting physically. And most of the freeper types, for all their bluster, just aren't equipped to do that.

28. Well, to be honest
I'm big and ugly too, so it probably would never have happened to me in the first place :)

I admire your position, and I do agree with you in principle, but if in that situation, I'm not certain I could actually hold myself back after having been physically assaulted.

31. Non-violence isn't for sissies
It takes a lot of training, community, dedication, study, and discipline not to give rein to the natural impulse to strike back. And make no mistake, you'll probably get walloped a few times. Maybe more than a few. That's why it's vital to have a community to support each person. As Obama said, "They need a divided America; we don't."

8. Some comments from Chimpy fans at recent grassroots event
I and a few others have been doing grassroots stuff for Kerry including getting people registered to vote and get absentee ballots in Madison.

Most of the Chimpy fans that stop by are generally knuckleheads who say witty stuff like "is this the Bush table?" or "Kerry does have issues" pointing to the Issue papers. They run away quickly if asked why they support Bush.

Last weekend, there were a couple disturbing Chimpy fans that made me want to prepare for an assault. One guy went right up to my face (older, fat guy who looked like he lived with Mommy) and screamed "Kerry is evil! Kerry is evil!" I saw the madness in his eyes and politely asked him to move along. He glared at me like he was going to hit me. I stared him down and pointed to my left. He left. I wasn't sure if he was going to return.

Another guy (military looking) was hanging out with his dad (also military looking) and walked by the Kerry table. He formed his hand into a pistol shape and muttered loud enough for a few of us to hear "if I had my pistol...." and pointed at us. I was ready to pounce on the guy if he dared make a move on some of the volunteers who were there (older women handing out stickers).

I don't trust most Chimpy fans as far as I can spit on them. I arm myself with pamphlets concerning Bush's AWOL record, his flip-flops, PNAC links, Swift Smear debunking and other info to hand to them if they are just looking over the table suspiciously.

If you need such documents, PDFs are available:

As for the guy and his air pistol, I did think about reporting him but the line was too long with people trying to get stickers, info and other Kerry-Edwards merch. It all happened pretty quickly.

18. It's very disturbing to me
how irrational and violent the emotions are on their side. I don't think it's ever been like this. What's created it? Seems to me it's about rightwing radio, Regnery press, and internet hate-sites/email. I wonder if people like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh have any idea what they've created with their poison, or care.

23. My wacky theory.
I honestly believe it's unresolved shame over the way many of them behaved after the 2000 election. Deep down, those people know what happened was an affront to democracy, but they were so wrapped up in getting their fellow religious fanatic/tax cuts for the rich guy in, they didn't care. So now they are overcompensating, and a Bush win would be a kind of salve: "See, he won, and this time all the votes were counted."

There was that story posted here a couple of days ago by the woman who answered her door to a Bushnik pushing propaganda. When she told him she wasn't interested, he got bent out of shape and yelled "Gore lost. Get over it," out of the blue. It sounds like a case of projection to me.

I have a few honest Republican friends, and they've kind of hinted, without actually saying, that they don't like the way 2000 went down, now that the heat has died away. Some of these people can't admit it, even to themselves, but it bothers them all the same.

I'm sure they can find the Chimpyhead. Perhaps do an editorial in the Portland paper asking the woman to come downtown and face charges. If she is such a firm believer in Bush, she'll take the fall.

22. don't expect "the Portland paper" to run any such thing
The paper in the original post, the Portland Tribune, is a right-wing rag that is a free (read: no one would pay for it) that also sponsors a right-wing radio station here. I was amazed that they ran this photo on the front page, but I suspect they are trying to mitigate their financial losses by trending toward sensationalism.

The daily newspaper is the Oregonian, whose editorial board is so supportive of Bush that they sometimes give the Wall Street Journal op-ed page a run for the money. They have endorsed Republican candidates for President, with the notable exception of 1996, since the Nixon years and helped former Senator Bob Packwood cover up his 1992 sexual assault scandal until after the election. This is why we now have Senator Gordon "Pea Packer" Smith as our junior Senator, the only right-wing Senator on the west coast save Alaska.

I agree, it is assault. The woman who was attacked has publicly asked for information regarding her attacker via our local Indymedia site. Visit at your own risk, for this site is frequented by Nader crazies and people who would protest their own mothers if they didn't submit to every leftist demand.

But her story is here: http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/08/294698.shtml

I sent this:

The unidentified woman who was a Bush supporter committed battery on the person expressing her views. I would imagine the Portland police department and those in the Bush campaign headquarters could identify the woman and have her face justice for her foolish act.

Let's see how fair Portland is with its citizens.

33. Gotta Be a Freeper
This picture got some play over on Liberty Post today. There are quite a few independently minded conservatives and libertarians there and they found it outrageous too.

You'd be surprised how many conservatives are disgusted with Bush and are not going to vote for him in this election. Bush is going into the stretch of this election with a severely fractured base and the only ones left to do his dirty campaign work are the extreme partisan GOP Hacks, like the woman shown in the picture.

It’s why he is going to lose, if Kerry runs an excellent campaign, which is imperative.

Glad to be here. This place has a lot of intelligent posters and a real enthusiasm for the upcoming election. You can get a good read on how well a campaign is doing by the attitudes and demeanor of a candidate's supporters. On FR the mood is angry, psychotic and depressing. IOWs it's a lot like George W. Bush.

I think it's a good sign for Kerry.
