Just Keep It Peaceful, Protesters; New York Is Offering Discounts
By JENNIFER STEINHAUER

With these buttons, visitors will be able to enjoy savings at participating NYC & Co. member hotels, restaurants, retailers, cultural offerings and other attractions.

Thinking about smashing windows or overturning cars during the Republican National Convention? Think again: that will cost you a discounted buffalo chicken salad from Applebee's or a cheaper ticket to see "Tony n' Tina's Wedding."

In a transparently mercantile bid to keep protesters from disrupting the Republican National Convention later this month, the Bloomberg administration will offer "peaceful political activists" discounts at select hotels, museums, stores and restaurants around town during convention week, which begins Aug. 29.

Law-abiding protesters will be given buttons that bear a fetching rendition of the Statue of Liberty holding a sign that reads, "peaceful political activists." Protesters can present the buttons at places like the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Sex, the Pokémon Center store and such restaurants as Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too and Applebee's to save some cash during their stay.

N.Y. Mayor to War Protesters: Shop Till You Drop, Too

By Michael Powell

NEW YORK, Aug. 17 -- Why worry about antiwar views, anarcho-syndicalist politics and "Dump Bush Now!" placards when something serious is at stake -- like money? <snip>

PERKS FOR PROTESTS

By DAVID SEIFMAN

August 18, 2004 -- Bash Bush and save big!
For a limited time only, protestors at the upcoming GOP convention are eligible for discounts at hotels, restaurants, theaters and more, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday.

The city's "Welcome Peaceful Political Activists" promotion is designed to cash in on an estimated 200,000 demonstrators expected to descend on the city in two weeks to voice their opposition to President Bush.

"If we get a large number of people here who want to be political activists and express themselves, no reason we shouldn't welcome them just in the same way as we are welcoming the delegates and the press," Bloomberg said at a press conference in the Midtown headquarters of NYC & Co., the convention and visitors bureau.

"We want to make sure protesters feel welcome here and that they take advantage of all New York City has to offer . . . It's no fun to protest on an empty stomach," said the billionaire mayor.

The discounts — including deals at certain hotels, restaurants, museums and stores — are available to anyone who picks up a button at NYC & Co. or visits its Web site, nycvisit.com. <snip>

Protest nice, get good price

DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU

Protest and save! With this official button, convention protesters will be welcome to discounts in stores, restaurants and theaters across the city, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday.

Heckling Republicans during the GOP convention could pay off for protesters - as long as they do it peacefully.
Offering more carrot than stick, Mayor Bloomberg announced that protesters who pledge to be nice can get discounts on everything from hotel rooms to zoo tickets.

N.Y. Welcomes Protesters With Discounts

By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

NEW YORK - Discounted hotels and Broadway show tickets for convention protesters?

That's what city officials offered Tuesday to those who behave lawfully at the Republican National Convention. But the plan doesn't guarantee that only peaceful protesters will get the reduced prices and the free felt-tip pens.

I had just responded to another post with a belly laugh, and had the exact same reaction to this one. So in the interest of saving bandwith, I linked my belly laugh instead of instead of retyping it!

2. People who are going to stage vandalism or violent protest
want President Bush to win or just don't care one way or the other. Anybody who really cares about the direction this nation is going and recognizes the danger of another four years of President Bush shouldn't protest violently or with vandalism.

Frankly I am 99% sure they will have Republican operatives (I doubt they can still use the FBI) in the crowds to incite violence.
