Already the target of criticism over state election reforms, Florida officials are now facing another challenge--ensuring that areas devastated by Hurricane Charley recover in time for the November election.
While the state overhauled its system after the disputed 2000 election, when Florida became the battleground to determine the next president, it has remained under national scrutiny because of charges that hundreds of thousands of voters were disenfranchised.
In a state where the outcome of the presidential race hinged on 537 votes, activists want to make sure the state does everything possible to ensure that all votes are counted, particularly in areas where people might have lost their identification along with their residences.
