ARGH. Someone told me that she's voting for bush b/c "it's the patriotic
thing to do."

ARGH

I have said this to about three or four people now - voting for Bush isn't patriotic - VOTING is patriotic! Just voting at all! After that, being INFORMED and voting based on KNOWLEDGE is patriotic. Voting out of ignorance is NOT patriotic!

How can we change this image that is here, at least in western Michigan, that Repubs are more patriotic than Dems? I put a flag on my car next to my Kerry bumpersticker. What else . . . ?

1. If I ever hear someone put the word "patriotic" in a political statement
again, I'll rip their head off. I can't stand that sort of dumbshit, simpleton concept.

7. And so was voting for Hitler...
but that doesn't mean it was a good idea. Another thing--what about these people who say, 'I'm not really into politics.' when you try and tell them what their government has been up to, yet they are planning on voting for Bush. Don't. Fucking. Vote. Okay?

8. here's mark twain's view on patriotism-- may help a bit
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 08:27 PM by AZDemDist6
I pray you to pause and consider. Against our traditions we are now entering upon an unjust and trivial war, a war against a helpless people, and for a base object -- robbery. At first our citizens spoke out against this thing, by an impulse natural to their training. To-day they have turned, and their voice is the other way. What caused the change? Merely a politician's trick -- a high-sounding phrase, a blood-stirring phrase which turned their uncritical heads: Our Country, right or wrong! An empty phrase, a silly phrase. It was shouted by every newspaper, it was thundered from the pulpit, the Superintendent of Public Instruction placarded it in every school-house in the land, the War Department inscribed it upon the flag. And every man who failed to shout it or who was silent, was proclaimed a traitor -- none but those others were patriots. To be a patriot, one had to say, and keep on saying, "Our Country, right or wrong," and urge on the little war. Have you not perceived that that phrase is an insult to the nation?

or another

If patriotism had been taught in the schools years ago the country would not be in the position it is in today. Mr. Skinner is better satisfied with the present conditions than I am. I would teach patriotism in the schools, and teach it this way: I would throw out the old maxim, "My country, right or wrong," etc., and instead I would say, "My country when she is right."

I would not take my patriotism from my neighbor or from Congress. I should teach the children in the schools that there are certain ideals, and one of them is that all men are created free and equal. Another that the proper government is that which exists by the consent of the governed. If Mr. Skinner and I had to take care of the public schools I would raise up a lot of patriots who would get into trouble with his.

Once Kerry is elected, she will vote for him next time since it will be the patriotic thing to do.

"And I hate it when I hear . . .
"I'm voting for Bush because he stands by what he says."
I am so sick to death of hearing that one. I keep reminding people that stubbornness is not a virtue, to no avail.

The mindless patriots hate the terrorists above all else. School her in Iran Contra, and the rehiring of Poindexter and Abrams.
