THIS is what the swiftboat nonsense is all about
Domination of the news cycle. Pure and simple.. Every minute "debunking" this issue is a minute that Kerry's true message is NOT getting out.
Rove is no dummy.. He knew that his guy was weak, so he had to attack the strength of the one who had it.

Big lies work better than little ones...and now the media is consumed with this bogus story, and valuable time is wasted "fighting" it..

Google tells the story

Results 1 - 10 of about 20,100 for swiftboat
Results 1 - 10 of about 19,100 for swiftvets.
Results 1 - 10 of about 9,790 for swiftboat vets.
Results 1 - 10 of about 415,000 for kerry lie

1. So let's change the subject
Write to all the news outlets and local papers and message boards about ANYTHING except the vets. The economic plan, the troop redeployment, Laci friggin' Peterson, ANYTHING. It takes two to play ball and if we don't play, the media will have to drop it.

3. Time is short, and they know what brings in the moolah
I think most of us has been writing and calling for YEARS..and of course they will report what they are TOLD to report..

If the blood in the water gets thick enough, some may start bailing on *, but for now, they are happy to have it both ways..

It's a pretty nifty little scheme.. If the dems try to change subjects the repubes holler...that dems are afraid to talk about "it", because there is a "there" there.. and if they DO talk about it, the repubes just say.."see ..we told you there was something there, or they would not spend so much time refuting it..

It's like a guy who gets picked up and accused of rape.. If his picture is in the paper, and a story written about him, even if it turns out he's not the guy, the fact that he's been accused, "marks" him forever..

Rove is like the neighborhood tom cat.. he's "marking" everything in sight..

2. not all........
either Craig Crawford or ??? Henry, two fairly objective newshacks, said that the pugs' MAIN, almost ONLY tactic, since March, mind you, soon as they knew it was going to be Kerry, was to SMEAR him, drive his negatives up. they've continued to do so, because they have NO positive issues on which to run.

none

they said it straight out there, and I think that's at LEAST as much, if not more important than your theory, which certainly is a component of the overall smear campaign, and, indeed, keeps Kerry on the defensive, as you imply, forcing him to answer charges, while looking WEAK and disHONEST, instead of getting his own positive messages out.

I was pleased and suprised at how straightforward somebody like that was, cause both of them seem to delight in sticking it to Kerry most of the time.

both of them castigated the campaign last night, for failing to react in immediately to this attack, with Crawford calling it LIES at one point, quite breezily, as if it was just one more entertaining bit of the game he covers so superciliously, so uninvolvedly.

what a jagoff

5. That's true, but when those frauds pop up on tv
and the word swiftboats or swiftvets is mentioned, those are the words that people will "google"..and remember..

I would bet that if you asked 20 people on the street what an affadavit is, most would not know :(

6. Apples and Oranges
From the web:

Results 1 - 10 of about 16,700 for +swift +veterans +Kerry +lie.

Results 1 - 10 of about 30,700 for +swift +veterans +Kerry +GOP.

What does that really tell one? Nothing really. Much like the results at the top of this thread.

8. Your numbers would be more meaningful if you searched by phrase
You're absolutely right about domination of the news cycle -- but the way you used Google makes things seem worse than they are.

"Kerry lie" (in quotes) only gets 2150 hits -- the tops ones almost all from the usual suspects. But "Bush lie" gets 11,600 hits.

"Bush lied" gets 85,700 hits -- "Kerry lied" only 18,300.

"Bush lies" gets 54,000 hits to 12,700 for "Kerry lies."

That's roughly 4 1/2 to 1 on all counts.
