52. Don't Underestimate
the appeal of Zig-Zag Zell to the middle voters. His gentle demeanor and homespun humor is pretty effective. Having him in prime time is not good for Kerry in the purple states.

Being a former Georgia boy... I have seen Zell connect as a populist. I have read his book and I predict he will be well received by the swing voters.

Just a thought.

25. And Also
Let me get this straight...

The keynote speech, a great honor in a political convention -- they searched high and low for a Republican worthy of the honor. But, failing to find even ONE, they turn to Zell Miller.

Democratic Convention Keynote Speaker: Barack Obama, Rising Star of the Democratic Party

Republican Convention Keynote Speaker: Democratic Convention Keynote Speaker (1992) Zell Miller, "Rising Star of the Democratic Party (also 1992)".

8. Well...
I d think they are planning a little party for Zell. The dems I mean. If he announces a party change in the middle of his announcement, that will be, in effect, a "tree falling in the woods, no one around to hear it" moment. It has no real politik effect.

On the other hand, that could open him up to all sorts of things, like a court action from the Georgia Dem Party. I hope it does.

Having him sucking up dem congressional budgets, while being a repuke in all but name *should* come with consequences.

They should put together audio/video clips of Zell with those comments Zell made about Kerry. Play them on the night ha speaks at the convention. End it with something like "Zell Miller, you can take him on his word?"

32. Yes. As far as I can recall, this is a precedent.
Ron Reagan isn't a Republican anyway, so I don't think anyone was shocked that he spoke at the DNC.

But Zell is technically a Democrat. I wonder if this is supposed to be some kind of "gotcha" on behalf of the Republicans. In other words, since we used Ronald Reagan's son in our convention, they'll use a Democratic senator in theirs. If so, it will backfire.

Republicans don't like Zell because he is a Democrat. Democrats don't like Zell because he is philosophically a Republican.

I see nothing to gain by having Zell be the keynote.

37. The Fact That He Even Calls Himself a Democrat
While basically having his lips permanently suction-cupped to Bush's ass on every single major vote is laughable to anyone who knows politics, anyway.

For those who will be watching the convention who have never heard of Zell Miller, they're going to be in for a treat. The man is like a schitzophrenic rodent on speed and hallucinogens, except not as lucid. I think there's literally something medically and mentally wrong with him. If that's who the RNC wants as a spokesman for them, I say go for it.

Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 10:50 AM by pse517
There must be a story here. This is just way too fishy even though he has been a conservative Democrat.

I found this link with the Kerry campaign's repsonse to him being named head of Democrats for Bush interesting. Shows what a flip-flopper Miller is.

Every bit as much as Democrats loved Jeffords when HE flipped.

Spend some time lurking the other boards and you'll see them rooting for Zell as VP or Sec. State.

41. Alan Keyes is a lightning rod.
He's right there with all the other nutcases the GOP would rather hide.

Tell you what, though. I don't see Zell gaining the Bushies very much. What would really be a hoot is if Bush started calling himself a national unity candidate because one somewhat high-profile Democrat(?) endorsed him. I mean, they used to put the "bipartisan" label on bills that passed with as few as three Democrats (including Zell Miller) voting in favor, so I wouldn't put it past him.

I'd like to see their keynote speaker go up against our keynote speaker.

God, I can't wait until he's gone. I don't think any of you not from Georgia can understand our embarrassment/shame/utter disappointment in ourselves for putting him there and in him for his despicable behavior. Sometimes saying I'm sorry just isn't good enough......

35. This just demonstrates
That the Republican Party has no one who is capable of speaking to the American people on behalf of the party, so they turn to a Democratic elected official. How pathetic is that?

How's this for a fantasy: Zell Miller is actually a deep-cover mole set in by the DNC to infiltrate the GOP. When he addresses the Republican convention he denounces Bush as a coward and a liar. LOL

61. Repubs love dead Democrats
First Norm Coleman chairs the RNC, now Zell makes the keynote speech.

Reminds me of a line Mike Dukakis trotted out in 1988. He said that the only Democrats the Republicans ever love are the dead ones (he said this in response to BushDaddy invoking FDR and HST on the stump).

Seems to me his words apply in this situation, too.
