DNC PRESS RELEASE ON ZELL AND RNC: 'Elephant in Donkey Clothes'
Press Release

For Immediate Release
August 19, 2004

STATEMENT BY TERRY MCAULIFFE ON ZELL MILLER

Washington, D.C. - In response to reports that Zell Miller will keynote
the Republican National Convention, Democratic National Committee
Chairman Terry McAuliffe issued this statement:
"In naming Zell Miller their keynote speaker, the Republicans are simply
trotting out an elephant in donkey's clothing.

"'Zig-Zag Zell' long ago changed course and endorsed George W. Bush,
regularly votes with the Republicans, refuses to attend Democratic
Caucus meetings and practically supported Bush's agenda in its entirety.

"This is emblematic of what the Republicans are trying to do with their
convention - namely mislead the American people. In the same way that
Bush claiming he's 'getting the job done' doesn't make it true,
Republicans claiming that Miller is a Democrat doesn't make it true
either."

4. Was Traficant ever formally removed from the party?
I think the press release is a good thing. Just make sure all the Democrats who the press talks to during the RNC point out that Zell really isn't a Democrat and wonder why he bothers calling himself one.

9. Crazy Zell stands firmly in the mainstream while watching his party...
...move to the "far left".
At the same time the Republican party moved to the center where he resides. All this while he stood firmly in place.

The world must truly revolve around 'Ol Zell.

10. Answer please
"refuses to attend Democratic Caucus meetings"

So does that make HIS attendence record worse than Kerry's?

Or does that mean that HE refussed to sign "The Oath" before allowed in?

Or did the "usher" rip up his ticket because he had a small "Bush Chenny" sticker on his shirt?

Zell is a card carrying member of the GOP and should just go away!

Kick him out I say!!!!!

17. It Means He doesn't associate with the Dem Caucus
If a leadership vote were held, he would vote with the Republicans. So, really, they control the Senate 52-48 formally. I'm surprised the Republicans haven't called a new leadership vote and then used this extra vote as a pretext for grabbing one more committee seat per committee.

18. So like, what does he do when he's not at the meetings?
Wander the halls talking to portraits of dead Senators like Nixon did?

11. Better "late than never" I guess. Wish he'd gone after him way back....
he could have "pre-empted this" instead of being behind the curve...but it's still good news.

20. I hate this, but goddamnit he gave the keynote for us in 1988
This isn't good.
I'm afraid this may well help Bushco with "conservative" democrats.

21. Not to worry.
He is the very rare exception--not the rule. Can you name even 5 DINOs? As a guest on Hardball put it: The Dem party hasn't really changed much since he gave that keynote address. It is Zell who has changed.

People know a scoundrel when they see one.
