Dear Mr. Matthews,

There are times, even during the most partisan of battles, when the lines of fair play get erased and the dark fingers of hatred take over. Vitriolic hatred, grounded not in fact but in innuendo, designed not to inform but to impugn. These times sadden us all, and we hope that someone with the visibility to do so will finally take a stand and shout “enough.” I thank you for doing just that this evening.

My party affiliation should be easy to see, but this goes far beyond who carries a (d) or an (r) next to their names. It goes to the heart of who we are and how we conduct ourselves, for it shows to all who will see if principle will stand the test of time, or be shuttled aside in favor of shadowy wink-wink-nudge-nudge “I didn’t do it” smears masquerading as truths.

Allow me to take this opportunity to commend you for asking the questions that need to be asked, and for not allowing the talking points du jour to take the place of real answers. Please continue to look beyond the ludicrous canned responses and ferret out the real truths. In these times there can be no higher calling.
