How to polish off the Swifties
This is an incredible opportunity and potentially historic moment of the ilk of Welch's asking McCarthy if he had any decency.

1) Demand that they tell how they lept to action to save the universe. Who was the organizer? They intimate that somehow they simultaneously woke up in dread that Kerry could be C-in-C, and put aside their peaceable ways out of altruism for humanity itself. Okay, how did you guys form?

2) Find all Nixon quotes (tapes, hopefully; those would be damning) about O'Neill, and expose him further as an agent for the epitome of dark forces.

3) Remind all that their true beef is the protesting and progressive politics; discrediting his service is by definition substantiation for their REAL point: they disagree with him politically. Thus, their whole thrust is dishonest: they're just looking to discredit him, without honestly saying what bugs them.

4) Hammer O'Neill as a liar: he's a registered Repub, even though he said he wasn't. He donated to Bush I, but claimed he voted for Perot twice.

5) Ridicule and harass Thurlow for his deception.

6) Repeat Corsi slurs as if they were the voice of the organization. Hate-filled sexist filth are good copy.

7) Constantly harp on the Bush/Rove connection to Perry. It's a great excuse to talk about huge amounts of money--from a non-Swiftie, mind you--and show photos of Junior and Perry, or beaming Smirky at generic fundraisers like the "haves and have mores" moment from F-911. Make them scream. Show how they've lied about not knowing anything about it.

8) Ridicule the specifics: was there NO gunfire after the mine exploded in the Bronze Star incident? None? Absolutely? At what point does sporadic become fierce, or whatever. Show that they're splitting hairs. Talk about the Silver Star moment; are they seriously going to paint Kerry as greasy for shooting a VC with a rocket launcher in the back as he runs in a combat zone? That's no atrocity; he wasn't surrendering. It's a battlefield; do these big macho chickenhawks want this enemy combatant to get away to kill us again? It's not like Kerry didn't attack the position and force the guy to run...

9) Blast them for hypocrisy. How dare they get huffy for having their word questioned; they are attacking a fellow sailor for his performance under fire. When one does something like that, one's dirty laundry are ABSOLUTELY fair game. What kind of chickenshit blindsiding bushwackers would demand the privilege of being above reproach, especially WHEN THEY STARTED IT. What kind of lowlifes condone use distortions like this?

The essence of their message is that they're humble and moral citizens called to duty out of concern for the truth, but their agenda proves the very soul of their organization to be a lie.

2. O'Neill meets Nixon, does his bidding
June 2, 1971: Oval Office meeting with Bob Haldeman

Haldeman: We got these guys now forming this Veterans for a – Peace with Justice, or uh – the veterans –
Nixon: They came in to see me? Are they here?
Haldeman: No we don’t want them to be able to see you yet. We don’t want to –
Nixon: Who are they?
Haldeman: Well, it’s this guy, uh, he’s got a beard, one of ‘em, and there’s this Navy officer , just got out yesterday –
President: Yeah.
Haldeman: -- crew cut, real sharp looking guy who is more articulate than Kerry. He’s not as eloquent; he isn’t the ham that Kerry is. But he’s more believable.

<snip>

Haldeman: Colson put this together.

<snip>

Haldeman: This guy now , is gonna, he’s gonna move on Kerry. He’s gonna move around the country.

June 16, 1971: Oval Office meeting with John O’Neill
Nixon: I really feel that what you’re doing, you’ll take brickbats, you go on some of these TV shows like the Cavett thing, you’re gonna get banged, but – you’ll get terribly discouraged and say the whole country’s – and so forth. But I think ya gotta remember, uh, you have to remember, that uh, that uh, now {unintelligible] in Vietnam should be enough, that now you would have the to get back and reassure people that those few that come back – like Kerry and the rest – don’t speak for all.

<snip>

Nixon: That’s great. Give it to him, give it to him. And you can do it, because you have a pleasant manner, too, because you’ve got – and I think it’s a great service to the country.

<snip>

Nixon: You fellows have been out there. You’ve got to know, seeing the barbarians that we’re up against, you’ve got to know what we’re doing in that horrible swamp that North Vietnam is. 33:40 You’ve got to know from all our faults of what we have in this country that, that what we’re doing is right. You’ve got to know too, people are critics. Critics of the war, critics of , run America down. Those that are, uh – well in every respect, either get out of Vietnam, get out of , get out of the world, etcetera etcetera. You’ve gotta know that you’re on the winning s—that, that you’re on the right side.
