Hats off to Kerry

From July 1968 to June 1969 I was a gunner on a Swift boat out of Cat Lo, Vietnam. I am a charter member of the Swift Boat Sailors Association.

Two months ago, I received a request from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth to join their effort. Though a Bush supporter, I was one of the few who refused.

I take my hat off to anyone who served on a Swift boat. I know the hell the Swift boat crews had to face 24 hours a day patrolling the canals in that rotting jungle. It took guts to get on that gunboat on a daily basis and lead a Swift boat crew into that hell.

John Kerry is a Swift boat veteran, and John Kerry had the guts to lead his crew. Politics aside, you can't take that away from him.

Low blows

Regarding the smear campaign being waged against John Kerry: Could the Bush supporters sink any lower? In recent days it has become common knowledge these anti-Kerry "Swift boat" ads are constructed, managed and financed by GOP insiders in much the same fashion as were similar attacks on Sens. John McCain and Max Cleland in previous election cycles. And these ads are every bit as untrue as the earlier ones.

I am a conservative Republican, but I cannot understand how this sort of thing can be swallowed by very many who are actually paying attention. May God help us if this is the future of political discourse.

1. Wow. That's telling.
Thanks for reprinting these. Good to know there's still some 'pugs with scruples.

Actually, out of respect, I'll call them Republicans.

2. unfortunately
neither of these guys mention that they are considering NOT voting for Bush as a result of this type of thing. That's great that they condemn it, but it's not going to do much good if they still cast their votes for * in November

4. Well, the thing is, they're at least willing to acknowledge that some
really dirty stuff is being perpetrated by their guy. We have ten more weeks to get them to pull the lever for Kerry.

It's a start, anyway!

6. The thing about 'slinging shit ' is this:
It's hard to do without getting some--- and sometimes most--- of it on you.

7. And get this in there every time
Whenever you mention this fiasco, and go through the litany of lies being peddled by the well-financed Swift Boat Veterans (and wouldn't some of that money do a lot more good if it was providing VA benefits), be sure to say that George W. Bush has failed and refused to denounce the Swifties, and that by his silence on the matter he apparently approves of their smear tactics.

8. what republicans do best
One of the things republicans do best is nail their toes to the floor.

In this case I don't know so much if we're doing anything right but they're sure doing a lot wrong.

My dad, who built a relatively nice estate through real estate, always said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that the other guy isn't."

Republicans are a one-tricky pony. When the trick bores the audience, they have nothing left in their bag.

Anyway, thanks for posting these. It's always good to see they are pulling the wool over fewer and fewer people's eyes.

9. Thanks for posting this
I am very glad that at least some Republicans are distancing themselves from this kind off smear campaign.

It is a good first step and it is giving me hope that we might be able to unite this country, after Bush is out of the White House. And besides that, some moderate Republicans who are already leaning into our direction might consider not voting for Bush just because of these utterly disgusting attacks.

10. Props to hometown area, home of Future 44th Pres's First Lady
Yer makin me proud!

Because of the 30 day rule in the Akron (OH) Beacon Journal, I fired off an e-mail about the swiftie liars to the Cleveland Plain Dealer this AM.

Asked for Larry Thurlow to publicly apologize for living a 25-year lie and to return his Bronze Star.

Something to that effect.
