Will Police Use Sound Weapon Against NYC Protestors?
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&e=19&u=/ap/gop_convention_protest

<<<...It's called the Long Range Acoustic Device, developed for the military and capable of blasting warnings, orders or anything else at an ear-splitting 150 decibels.

Authorities on Thursday unveiled a mini-arsenal of devices and counterterrorism equipment they're getting ready for the convention, which opens a week from Monday.

***

The department recently bought two of the 45-pound acoustic sound machines for $35,000 apiece, and plans to mount them on Humvees posted outside Madison Square Garden. It would mark the first time the instrument — which can beam sounds for 300 yards or more — has been used by a civilian force.

"We believe we'd be able to use them in a number of scenarios," said Paul Browne, the police department's chief spokesman. >>>

4. I can't imagine the neighbors putting up with it
Piss off the whole area just to annoy some
protestors. Come on. Bloomberg is still a
politician on a very thin wire.

7. I Think the Weapon Can be Targeted At a Specific Area
I don't know the exact dimensions of the area or at what distance.

I read an article on newscientist.com a while back that I don't have a link for that suggested the weapon can be accurately targeted.

<<< Pentagon considers ear-blasting anti-hijack gun

19:00 14 November 01

Weapons that fire high-intensity "sonic bullets" could be used by sky marshals to incapacitate terrorists who try to hijack passenger aircraft. The US Department of Defense is assessing the technology following the attacks on 11 September.

Knocked down

To test the system, Norris created a cutdown version and turned it on himself. "It almost knocked me on my butt. I wasn't interested in anything for quite a while afterwards," he says. "You could virtually knock a cow on its back with this." >>>

5. I'd have to see it before I believe it.
The military has long been talking about their latest, greatest advances in crowd control weaponry.

Couple years ago it was a big microwave guns that blasts the crowd with microwaves that causes excrutiating pain but no real burns (bullshit). But that one still hasn't shown up yet.

11. The devices are said to be 10 decibels above a jet taking off -
I would think that might do some damage to people's ears.

No - these people are not kidding around. And some of them are contractors, not just American national guard or cops.

I saw it in Savannah, and it is not pretty to see an American city
turned into a police state.

8. Sounds more like a crowd control device than a big P.A. system
At that volume, sound pressure would be uncomfortable, if not dangerous. I'm sure they have figured out what frequencies are the most effective for the task of crowd control. (Low frequency gut-busters, high frequency ear-splitters, and maybe a little Slim Whitman for good measure).

9. I wonder how it affects children and elderly in the area
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 11:43 AM by kayell
My 70 year old uncle will likely be in that crowd.

I realize 70 isn't exactly elderly, but I've seen people a lot older than him at protests. My mother marches with a women in her mid-80s.

13. Unreal-same controversial weapon we were taking to Iraq
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/573509BF-21B3-42C2-8305-370D6CC9631E.htm

But independent military expert and frequent Pentagon critic William Arkin said while the weapon could be effectively used to chase Usama bin Ladin out of a his bolthole, its use in Iraqi cities could harm the sick, elderly and children.

"The US is making a huge mistake by trying to quietly deploy a new pain-inducing weapon without first airing all of the legal, policy and human rights issues associated with it."

18. I wonder what would happen...
if its intended targets outflanked this weapon and took it out of commission.

I'd think a hummer, with its high ground clearance, would be pretty easy for a large crowd of angry hooligans to tip over.

I'd hate to see 70,000 dollars of my tax money go to waste.

20. what would happen? Hundreds beaten, gassed, arrested prolly.
Then again, its not like they need much of an excuse for that.

Boy, this is gonna be a real circus!

Somewhere, some guy with a weak chin and a cushy office job is looking at these posts and interpreting them as a crazy communist scheme to disrupt their precious sound-weapons.

Note to guy with weak chin: kidding.
