Strange pair of bumper stickers!
I guess this is campaign related-

Seen on a dodge pickup in Bryan, Texas today

Message to the right of the Stars and Bars-

"I am a proud descendant
of a Confederate soldier."

Above that sticker one that read-

"Save the American economy
Outsource Bush Cheney"

Maybe Howard Dean was right to reach out to the Confederate flag waving pickup set.

1. My husband is a proud descendant of a Confederate Soldier, and he's
voting for Kerry...and voted for Gore, Clinton...etc.

His ancestor was a young man, fighting for what he was told to fight for. Much like our troops today. He deserves no scorn in my opinion.

8. I didn't mean to denigrate anyone
who decended from Confederate soldiers. I myself have that honor. Oh, yeah, union soldier, too. I would never display the Stars and Bars becuse it has come to mean something so hurtful to people I love. Would Mr. Grumpy display this pair of stickers? I just love the irony since in our area most Confederate flag wavers are Dumbya supporters.

up and stored in his footlocker. He has nothing to be ashamed of.

And yes, there is a possiblity that he might have put a sticker like that on his truck. Because he is proud of his ancestors. Just like he would put a "support our troops" sticker on, and hope like hell that they come home soon.

2. Well, I guess some of them are feeling it in their wallet
A lot of people draw the line when Bush's policy are starting to hurt them personally.

Bush is screwing the poor and middle class to give his tax breaks to his wealthy buddies. Only idiots don't get it.

I'm voting for Kerry, since Dean didn't get the nomination.

4. There's nothing inconsistent with being ....
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 09:05 PM by Rowdyboy
a) A descendant of a confederate soldier...My family came to Georgia in 1790 and Mississippi in 1819-way before they were states. Certainly, I had ancestors who fought in the confederacy? Also others who fought for the union. Your point is....?
b) I'm very proud of my ancestors for carving out a home from a frightening wilderness with little more than physical will on their side. However much I hate the economic/social policy prevalent in those times, I still respect the incredible fight they faced to survive in a totally unsettled area.
c) "Save the American economy...Outsource Bush-Cheney" Duh...What's to disagree with here?

There are MANY of us who are descended from confederate soldiers, proud of our history and are also disgusted by the destruction of the American economy through outsourcing.

There's absolutely nothing inconsistent here.

16. Extremely good point and "my bad"
However, in my defense, Mississippi was very thinly settled back in the 1790's. Room wasn't a problem...

21. Sure, no problem, thanks for seeing my point
but if the land seemed "thinly settled" at the time, it's only because the Indian populations in the area had been decimated by centuries of disease and dislocation--for example, a smallpox pandemic raged throughout a large swathe of North America during the early 1780s.

5. What this really means -
One less vote for Bush/Cheney!

Now, if he/she would also back that up with some Dem Representatives and Senators, both at the state and federal level . . .

7. I'm the descendent of a Confederate Soldier!
Proud? Somewhat. He fought bravely and honorably, even if I don't agree with his cause.
I'm also the descendent of a Union Soldier. He was also brave and honorable.

Dean was right to reach out, because our cause is just, even if thiers (the Confederates) was not.

to reach out. How he phrased his outreach was the problem. It pissed off a lot of African Americans.

11. My daughter and I "decorated" our vehicles alike...
John Kerry - upper left
Congressman Vic Snyder - upper right
"No Mo Bush" - upper center

Then, I bought some of those yellow ribbons that say "Support our troops" - they're on the right quarter-panel (?not sure that's what it's called)

We also have ribbons that are half red, white, and blue and half yellow that say "Support America". They have a heart in the middle that says "I love USA".

Maybe it's silly, but I think it's important to show people that Democrats love their country too.

14. It's due to the fact that the republicans have corrupted those symbols...
for their own message. It is sad to think that typically a US flag sticker or something of the like typically means something along the lines of "I support the president and our troops". Of course democrats love their country, that is what we are fighting so hard for in this election.

We need to get over the idea that if you don't agree with the current president that you don't agree with "America".

The "we" is partisan political debate has been diluted into a completely meaningless term only referring to "people that agree with me".

15. I'm not very good at talking politics but I've been
thinking alot lately about what I would to say to someone who asks about "supporting the troops" but not supporting *. The Iraq war is only a scratch compared to the whole list of things that that idiot has done to gash and scar our country. And not all of them have to do with war or terrorism. The thing I hate the most is his admins use of "fear tactics" to excuse taking away our rights and freedoms. Second on my list is taking away my "comfort" with free speech and dissent. I know he hasn't actually completly taken away the right to free speech but he (his admin) has made it uncomfortable for those of us who choose to speak openly of our disagreement with his policies.

The list could be very long - but those are the top things that I believe are threats to our way of life.

19. For quite a while, I completely rejected the American flag
(and I have a 40' flag pole in my yard!) I felt like it symbolized that I was buying in to all the hype after 9-11. I felt like it became a symbol for the fear they were using to take away our freedoms and get away with all manner of things.

Now, I feel like it's a symbol for what we Democrats are fighting for. We're gonna take our country back!

Tell your brother that we appreciate his service and that he is able to return home soon and safe.

22. He's been home safe for a while, thankfully
But I'll definitely pass the message along.

Yeah, it's hard when the general public is asking you to choose between
A: supporting a war that you don't believe in
or
B: being called un-American for speaking out against it

It's time for people to realize that we speak out against the abuse of power because we love our country.

It's MY flag, and the repukes can't have it!

23. There's no reason this juxtaposition of stickers should be strange. Only
in our current bizarro Rove America does it seem strange. Hopefully we are on our way to beginning to rectify that this year.

24. I'm a Northerner
And a proud descendant of many veterans of many wars. Don't knock people for being proud of their Confederate ancestors - you can be proud of honorable service and commitment to your country without being a racist or an evil person. Soldiers are men who do their duty - they don't form policy and most Confederate soldiers never owned a slave in their lives.

My great great grandfather fought for four years in the Union Army, he was nearly killed at Fredericksburg but he recovered and finished the war. Then he went west and killed Indians. Ironic? Horribly. I don't condone those policies but I am nevertheless proud of my ancestor's service. He was a government servant, just as our troops in Iraq are.

25. Unexpected thumbs up
Driving in Boston traffic last week a woman behind me honked her horn and started waving, laughing, giving me a thumbs up sign. I have two stickers on my rear bumper:
Bush - born on third base, thought he hit a triple.
and
Defend America! Dump Bush!
When the woman eventually passed me, I spotted a pro-life bumper sticker on her car.
Pretty strange.
