I'll add this to my arsenal. I got that e-mail from a 'friend', last week. I answered her, pointing out some of the more obvious inconsistencies, but this puts the final nail in the coffin.
She had actually called him. Paul is her late husband, a WWII Ace and a true hero. She supports Bush* and I don't think she'll change her mind. Oh well. Here's what she had to say about Connelley:
I have just spoken with Mr. Connelly by phone. (Paul taught me that one should always check one's facts!) This man is real...........not the invention of some internet user. If you don't believe me, do what I did. Call him. He was so very kind and answered several questions I posed. For instance: IF the "Swift Boat" folk have denounced Kerry (as I'd read) then who were the men who reportedly accompanied him across the river en route to the recent convention in Boston? It appears there were three crewmen (not officers) who at the time endorsed Mr. Kerry. Subsequently, one of the three has withdrawn his support. Mr. Connelly told me he has spoken with these men. The Swift Boat Veterans group who served in Vietnam at the same time as Kerry is indeed deeply offended by and unsupportive of Mr. Kerry's candidacy. Mr. Connelly confirmed the report of Kerry's 1st wound, (widely covered in numerous unsubstantiated e-mails) ........the result of firing a grenade launcher at the empty river bank when the craft was within 'do-not-fire' range, placing the entire crew in jeopardy. The grenade exploded and resulting shrapnel inflicted the minor wound on the man behind the weapon. Mr. Connelly also recounted that when Kerry requested the Purple Heart, his Commanding Officer turned him down. Kerry appears to have gone over his CO's head to secure this first medal. Those of you who knew Paul know that a true hero is one who never mentions nor takes advantage of his actions under fire. "I was just doing my job," is their universal response. When Paul's commanding General told him he wanted to put him up for the Medal of Honour but Paul would have to write his own commendation (guess the General had more important things to do?) Paul told him, "Sir. If I warrant the highest honour our Country confers upon it's military, then somebody else will just have to write the recommendation." As you all know, Paul was the last person from whom you would learn of his numerous medals and honours. No matter what one's politics, no matter one's history, does it not behoove us all to honour those of our family, circle of friends, fellow citizens who have sacrificed so much, not to mention those in coming generations, by learning as much as we can about potential leaders and then exercising our hard-won privilege to ensure the very best, most honest leader available, regardless of their Party affiliation? None are perfect; all have failings, as does all of humankind. Just think how history might have been changed had the citizens of Germany done more homework before electing Hitler ? There are so many decisions that have to be made by a President; the most important of which is whether or not to tell the truth. As Teddy Roosevelt once said, "If you'll steal FOR me, you'll steal FROM me!" Mr. Connelly has, apparently, researched his subject extensively .......reading official reports and interviewing knowledgable, involved personnel. He most generously shared his e-mail address with me, in case you would like to contact him "for free" without incurring long-distance charges. mrobertc@hotmail.com However, I recommend a phone call simply to get an immediate response to your questions and a "feel" for the man. I am not sending this as an endorsement of either candidate for the highest office in our great country. I am simply sharing so we may each consider all the information available when we cast our ballot in November. We are daily bombarded by paid advertisements from those with a serious agenda, both Republican and Democrat. Many of us have gone to great lengths to earn the right to vote - for some it came as a birth-right - for others it was a very personal and sacred choice. Read on............................ PLEASE ? I called the man that wrote this letter in Dallas, Texas. He graciously talked to me and confirmed that he wrote the letter and he authorized it's use anyway I wanted to make use of it. He said that he estimates from the amount of e-mail and phone calls he has gotten, that at least 20 million people have read it and said that many churches have called him asking permission to hand out copies of it in their churches.
His name is: Michael Connelly 3440 Timberglen Road Dallas, TX 75287-3490 Phone: 972-306-4717
