Accusations fly as deadline hangs over Nader petitioners

With signatures due Tuesday, Democrats say Ralph Nader's workers are misleading people; Nader staffers cite a smear tactic

Dressed smartly and wearing some of her best jewelry for a luncheon date, Susan Haggard, a longtime registered Democrat, made a quick stop at a home decor and gift store in an upscale Lake Oswego shopping district.

She was approached by a signature gatherer who asked if she wanted to help ensure four more years for President Bush. "I had on gold and diamonds, and he probably mistook me for a Republican," said Haggard, 65, of Portland.

But the petition wasn't for Bush. It was to put independent Ralph Nader on Oregon's Nov. 2 presidential ballot.
