Some Clinton supporters still not embracing Obama

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One week after Sen. Hillary Clinton made a public show of unity with Sen. Barack Obama, a new survey suggests supporters of the New York senator are increasingly less likely to follow her lead.

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appear at a unity rally in Unity, New Hampshire, in June.

A growing number of Clinton supporters polled say they may stay home in November instead of casting their ballot for Obama, an indication the party has yet to coalesce around the Illinois senator four weeks after the most prolonged and at times divisive primary race in modern American history came to a close.

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Friday (7/4/08), the number of Clinton supporters who plan to defect to Republican Sen. John McCain's camp is down from one month ago, but -- in what could be an ominous sign for Obama as he seeks to unify the party -- the number of them who say they plan to vote for Obama is also down, and a growing number say they may not vote at all.

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey completed in early June before the New York senator ended her White House bid, 60 percent of Clinton backers polled said they planned on voting for Obama. In the latest poll, that number has dropped to 54 percent.

In early June, 22 percent of Clinton supporters polled said they would not vote at all if Obama were the party's nominee, now close to a third say they will stay home.

In another sign the wounds of the heated primary race have yet to heal, 43 percent of registered Democrats polled still say they would prefer Clinton to be the party's presidential nominee. That number is significantly higher than it was in early June.

1. Do what you can
For Clinton supporters who decide to volunteer I've bought 50 Obama/Clinton (Not running mate they say Democratic Party Unity) photo buttons of the unity event in NH. I'm giving to them as a show of respect. Hopefully they talk to their friends.

Maybe before Denver Convention.

Yikes.

Thanks for your comments.

2. This can be verified by looking at that other site... CH... I don't know...
what they hope to gain from this, but it certainly puts strain on the Democratic party as a whole.

8. The MSM would like us to believe that it puts a strain on the party.
But there really aren't that many of them. The MSM makes it seem as if it's a much bigger problem than it really is. The media loves to cover a controversy... even if they have to create it themselves.

Personally I don't think we (or Obama) should give these people any more special attention. It just feeds the frenzy.

I agree, there aren't that many Hillary supporters who
are rejecting Obama.

I think the point of this article and others like it that I have seen here at DU in the last couple of days is to kill the mood/spirit of Unity that Obama and Clinton put in play a couple of weeks ago.

DON'T KILL THE UNITY, Folks!

They know how important this election is to the future of this Nation, not to mention Humanity in general, and they are still willing to act spitefully.

The do not need to be wooed. They need to be shamed.

How does CNN and the polling co. verify that everyone stating that they were a Clinton supporter is excatly what they say they are?

And why is Obama beating McCain in polls, despite the Clinton backers' alleged wavering?

18. All I can say is....
...When this country goes deeper into "The Shitter" because some people would much rather vote for 4 or 8 more years of George Bushes policies, then for someone who beat the person they supported in the primary, then they have no right to complain.

However, my other thought is, how sure are we that the people polled were actually Hillary supporters?

Those cats are 100% Clinton and don't even want to hear the name Obama. They still have hope Obama will drop out and Hillary will take the helm. They even said it at a meeting of theirs.

I was scared out of my mind.

32. They are in the LaRouche Movement?
Then they aren't Clinton supporters. LaRouche is NOT a Democrat, not even close. Hillary, whether you like it or not, IS a DEMOCRAT! How many times does it need to be said?

THE PRIMARIES ARE OVER! It is time to stop the bashing and start focusing on getting Senator Obama elected president!

30. The MSM is playing Divide & Conquer with Dems to help McCain
The media is about as "concerned" about Democratic unity as your average Republican. They just want to stir stuff up.

I take more stock in the GE polling. For example, it's interesting that Obama polls much closer to McCain in Kentucky in the GE than he did against Hillary in the primary. That tells me that Dems aren't as divided as the MSM might hope.

Does anyone really believe these are people who voted from Gore and Kerry?

I don't.

They're Democrats in name only, and they support Democrats and Republicans, depending on which race and which politicians they happen to be close to.
