I'm thinking a wake-up-America, cease-and-desist-whore-media press conference at the National Press Club in D.C. Participants on a blue-ribbon panel would stress the crucial importance of this election -- or any Presidential election -- and call out the media on the two issues Paul Krugman has identified: trivialization and bias. This would be in the wake of the Swift Boat liar ads.
Possible participants would include Walter Cronkite from media; Warren Buffett from business; General Clark, Max Cleland and other military/veterans; former Secretaries of State from Democratic administrations. From past Democratic administrations, possibly Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., the historian; Caroline Kennedy; Bill Moyers; Jimmy Carter himself; Bob Rubin.
The aim would be to make clear to the American people what Rove and Co., with the compliance of the press, are doing to our electoral process. The SBVT personal-attack ads would be a starting point, but the whole spectrum of media coverage and trivial, manufactured issues would be addressed, and the public put on notice to assess the current campaign and media coverage with a critical eye. The public would be encouraged not to be fooled, to identify issues important to them and demand that they be addressed, and to THINK FOR THEMSELVES!
