So, here it is: the Republicans have no defense for the simple fact that their chickenhawk in the white house didn't even serve honorably during the Vietnam War. They try to justify his "service" in TANG, but let's face it--he didn't serve--he bailed. He was a good-for-nothing bum who didn't even serve his light duty properly, going AWOL during an entire year of that "service" and missing a crucial health exam that would likely have shown that he was either an alcoholic or a cokehead.
Then you have John Kerry, whose family had money--probably not as much as the Bush family, but enough that if Kerry wanted a sweet duty stateside, he could have done it. Instead, he enlisted, and SERVED in Vietnam. He survived, was awarded medals for bravery, and then realized that his experience there made him uniquely qualified to protest the war. He'd seen, heard and experienced things which many others, including Bush, Cheney and a host of other assholes didn't, and knew the truth about war being true hell. So what if the "truth is out there" and so what if not everyone agrees with his choices after his service--the fact remains that he SERVED. He SERVED IN VIETNAM. He didn't ask for deferrments, he didn't ask for an envious position that didn't take him into combat. He was right next to a host of other soldiers who served our country in a very unpopular war.
Let's face it--the Repubs are nothing if not completely unable to comprehend that their "war" president is a chickenhawk who will never know the experience of war, who sends so many other people's children into another unpopular war, while trying to obfuscate the fact that KERRY was THERE, endured the war, served his country and knows EXACTLY what a real war is all about.
Regardless of whether Kerry places his service as a foreground issue or not, it doesn't matter--he served, Bush didn't.
