This is why the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was formed. The idea was to force Kerry to the high ground: To lie so horribly and viciously about Kerry that he would be enticed, nay, forced to drop any plan of attacking Bush on the AWOL issue and, instead, try to prove that Rove was behind the attack.

Well, across the Internet, and right here on DU, we have come up with an impressive amount of circumstantial, and occasionally direct, evidence of coordination between the SVT and the Republican Party. But you know what? I'll bet if you polled, 70% of the public would answer “Yes” to "Is there ANY truth behind the SVT allegations?” Why? Simply because of how long the story's been in the media and how much coverage it’s received. Same thing happened with the Saddam-9/11 linkage.

So what to do? Well, the “safe” strategy is being tried now. Link to smear back to Bush and make him pay the price. I hope that works, but I have my doubts. It didn’t work for McCain.

I think sooner or later, Kerry’s going to have confront Bush directly. And you know what? Judging from his earlier performances, I think he’ll crumble like a house of cards. I, for one, can’t wait.

1. He should find a way to confront him at the debates, if they ever occur.
Watch bush* start to stutter and fluster and speak in unintelligible sentences, like he does when he gets confused and has to think on his feet.

3. That won't work in the debates. His handlers will coach him to just
say "I think you served honorably in Vietnam, Mr. Kerry." I agree, Kerry has to catch him off guard on something, and he will stumble and stutter, and botch it up, but it's going to have to be something his handlers haven't thought of...something they haven't been able to coach him on how to respond.

5. And the format of the debates are still unannounced...
Will Kerry even get to confront Bush at the debates? Or will it be the "joint press conference" style?

6. Well, you know how Bush/Rove likes preemptive attacks....
And Terry McAuliffe did say:

"I look forward to that debate when John Kerry, a war hero with a chest full of medals, is standing next to George Bush, a man who was AWOL in the Alabama National Guard". 2/1/2004

8. The Public Believe The Lies BECAUSE The Media Reported Them As News!
The refutations of the lies have received far less coverage
than the lies themselves -- none on most outlets.

We have never had the media campaigning against us like this before.
It is costing us most of the swing vote that should be ours,
given this adminstration's abysmal record over the past 4 years.
It should not be nearly this close. The media has been successful in
corralling most of the swingable voters into the Bush* camp, so
we cannot expect nearly the historical percentage of undecided voters.
We will be lucky to get half of them. We can win without them.
We will have to.
