McCain says we have succeeded in Iraq!
We have succeeded in the following ways:

:bluebox: We have succeeded in bringing Al Quaeda to Iraq

:bluebox: We have succeeded in destroying Iraq's infrastructure

:bluebox: We have succeeded in displacing or killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraquis

:bluebox: We have succeeded in destroying our standing in the eyes of the rest of the world

:bluebox: We have succeeded in alienating many of our best allies

Well, you get the picture...

I am sure you can add your own...

This is far from a complete list, after all...

May we never achieve such success again!

1. Add this, an average of 18 US veterans commit suicide every day.

(edited to add link)

Not attempts, there are perhaps 1000 or more per month.

Successes. 18 per day, average.

Unbelievable?

3. Sadly, I am not surprised...
I knew there were suicides, but I hadn't realized there were so many...

When you consider what they were facing, not surprising at all, unfortunately...

2. We have succeeded in giving trillions of taxpayer $ to war profiteering corporations
Which, I think, was the entire purpose of the invasion. I also think that New Orleans and the Gulf Coast were "mission accomplished."

Neo-cons say this crap because their goals are quite different from ours and they HAVE accomplished what they set out to do.

4. I believe you are correct...
What great goals to have accomplished!

And on our backs, without our consent! :grr:

We have succeeded in putting the Iraq War tab on a check payable by future generations.

9. Ah, yes...
Another wonderful aspect of success! :sarcasm:

And that is going to be a problem for many years to come...

6. Does that mean we can out in less than 16 months??
If it is a success, what is the reason for staying?

10. I would think that we could indeed be out soon...
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 09:47 PM by CaliforniaPeggy
But I have no expertise on how quickly that could be accomplished...

7. Any good business person doing a cost benefit analysis on Iraq would
faint on how much the costs were compared to the benefits. Total disaster top to bottom But since we have "won" then why not follow Obama's plan so we can get the fuck out?

11. Well, I think Bush has seen the writing on the wall, at last...
Although he would never admit it.

And now he's talking about the event horizon, which sounds like a timetable to me...

He would never follow Obama's plan...

That would be like admitting failure!

8. Like all wars, this one has unintended consequences
For example, we seem to have strengthened the hand of Muqtada Sadr and his Iranian supporters. This is not what W and his cronies had in mind when they started the war.

Patrick Cockburn has written quite a lot about this. Here is a sample:

12. Thank you for the link.
Most interesting!

I suspect that most of Bush's ventures had consequences he never thought of...

He is too singleminded to think of such advanced ideas...

15. The invasion succeeded in getting Bush re-elected
I actually think this was a more important goal than the war profiteering.

On election night 2004, I heard Jeff Greenfield make a very good point: No incumbent President has ever been re-elected with an approval rating below 50%. No incumbent President has ever been defeated for re-election when U.S. troops were in combat abroad. One of those things was bound to change tonight.

Without the rally-round-the-flag spirit generated by the war, Bush would have been defeated (again).
