A Vietnam veteran featured in ads attacking Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's war record says he was misled by Republicans about speaking at an anti-Kerry rally in Gainesville.

Joe Ponder pulled out after learning the Alachua County headquarters for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign had distributed fliers for the event. President Bush's campaign has disavowed any ties to the anti-Kerry group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

A second member of the swift boat group skipped the Gainesville rally as well.

With speakers absent, Bush and Kerry supporters ended up in a three-hour sparring match. Kerry calls the attack on his Vietnam record a smear campaign.
