I was appalled to see Bob Dole questioning the seriousness of John Kerry’s wounds where he was awarded his Purple Hearts. First off, Mr. Dole is wrong on his assertion that Mr. Kerry won two of his Purple Hearts on the same day. A quick check of the facts shows that Kerry earned his Purple Hearts on the following days:
Feb. 28, 1969
March 5, 1969
April 17, 1969
Furthermore, Mr. Dole went on to question the severity of the wounds received by Mr. Kerry, and subsequently questioning the validity of the Purple Heart, stating that he didn't spend any time in a hospital. Another quick check of the facts shows that when Mr. Dole was wounded for the first time in WW2, it was under very similar circumstances as one of the events in which Kerry is being scrutinized. Neither Kerry nor Dole had to be treated in a hospital, but both received Purple Hearts. This reeks of a double standard. Are we to believe that Mr. Dole had the Purple Heart forced on him?
I don't know what was worse; the lies and disinformation being spread by Mr. Dole or the total lack of any kind of factual challenge by Mr. Blitzer. Why wasn't Mr. Dole corrected right then and there on live television? Surely, your organization spent some amount of time fact checking John Kerry and his record, so I would like to know why you allowed the lies to continue.
Mr. Dole sat there and repeated the Right Wing talking points without challenge from Mr. Blitzer.
I find this inaction deplorable and sad. Please muster the courage to question claims made by these people, especially when the facts are well known to be different.
