Who Sandbagged Obama?
by keiths
Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 09:07:02 AM PDT

What Pentagon functionary's office sandbagged Obama in Germany?

Would you be surprised to know it he was a former aide to Jesse Helms and to Trent Lott? That he was a Republican political appointee who used to work in George W. Bush's White House? That he helped write the platform of the Republican party in 2000? That he was the political director of the North Carolina state Republican Party?

............................

Whose office told Obama that a visit to Landstuhl, no matter even if he made the visit totally alone, "might" be a violation of regulations? Whose office first signed off on the visit, only to change the terms of the visit only after Obama arrived in Germany?

The office of Robert Wilkie, former aide to Jesse Helms and George W. Bush, campaign operative for the Republican Party, and Confederate Flag lover. Robert Wilkie: at the forefront of Republicanizing the military and using it as a Republican campaign tool.

goes on and on at:

1. This is important. The Pentagon has become political, and is interfering with campaigns now.

5. But why did Obama back down to this hack?
He's a sitting Senator. He could have still gone with someone from his Senate staff, Secret Service but no video or members of the media with their cameras.

If he goes, there are still military photographers there and its a success. But Obama backed down and didn't go at all. He made a bad call, and if he can't handle a partisan Pentagon hack trying to get in his way, how is he going to handle real attacks that are coming. He should have stood his ground, and said: but I'M GOING and you tell me how I can go as a sitting Senator on an official visit.

6. I think that it was an issue of using campaign funds as a means of transportation to get there
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 11:52 AM by ErinBerin84
The Pentagon only let him know a day before, so it may have been too late to arrange a different type of transportation for him to go by himself, or to get his Senate staff to come with him. I don't really know. His senate staff may have been in Washington working, since Obama still votes in the Senate, unlike McCain. People will have different interprettations of this, but I don't neccesarily blame the Obama camp for being outfoxed on this. And the media cameras would not have been allowed into this visit either, like the other visits he made earlier in the week, so I don't know why you even bring that up. It wasn't an issue, as you said, the cameras would all be military.

8. It would have been considered inappropriate. And since this was a set-up, Obama
was poised to lose either way. He did the right thing.

9. No, his CAMPAIGN FAILED. Their release should have said - PENTAGON RENEGES ON INITIAL OKAY
I was on DU the second this story broke.

#1. Obama's campaign didn't even mention the Pentagon at first
#2. I and other DU'ers immediately saw how this would be played out

10. Well, OK. Maybe they didn't realize what was happening--I don't know if they

knew they were being set up for a swiftboating. They DID say that the Pentagon told them it would be viewed as a political visit, though--but the Pentagon then sent out a spokesman to imply that Obama didn't want to go without staff and CAMERAS. How do you fight that? Clearly they were working in concert with the GOP.

12. His Senate staff was no longer with him. Their leg of the trip was over.
He was then being accompanied by his campaign staff.. and this leg of the trip was being paid for by the campaign.

The Pentagon made sure they at first OK'd the trip so he planned his itinerary that way. Then they purposely changed the rules on him *after* he had already started the campaign portion of the trip. It was too late for him to change anything.

It was done purposely. They set him up.
