An EXCELLENT point about the Swifties and Bush
I just got via email:

Why is it that they can find 250+ veterans to swear that Kerry was a showboat, a coward and a con man in Vietnam, but they can't find one guy who will swear that he knew GW Bush in the Air National Guard?

20. I heard Max Cleland say this the other day in Green Bay
Something tells me the Kerry campaign is already on top of this and Pitt probably heard this wording from someone in the campaign.

who can prove that they seen Bush in Alabama.

Did you witness GW Bush performing any National Guard Service between May 1972 and October 1973, in either Alabama or Texas? If so, you could be eligible for thousands of dollars in unclaimed reward money!! Here are the details of the Texas and Alabama rewards...or the latest reward offer, $10,000.00 for proof of service at Dannelly AFB!

8. Hey Will, have you been following Walt Starr's thread here on
Bush's medals? I think he may be on to something. As I recall from Vietnam times, you could just walk into the PX and buy most insignias.

14. Insignias
I can't speak to Vietnam eras PXs (before my time) but in the early 80s, me and all my buddies had rank and a number of other insignias that we had purchased at the PX. I had everything from Sergeant Major to General stars, along with any number of various "earned" devices.

It was one thing to buy them. It was quite another to wear them, of course. Just had them for the kids, or whatever.

Of note to me is that photo of Bush with his marksman badge. Yes, it is nice to earn "expert" in small arms. I knew lots of guys who did, and lots more (including me) who didn't. I don't doubt that he earned his.

No one I knew actually wore the insignia though, even in formal pictures. That Bush is wearing his suggests to me that he didn't have anything more substantial to put there. Which he wouldn't, of course, given his shitty service.

19. Same back in the 60's. It was one thing to buy them and
another thing to wear them...a wee bit of honor was involved there! My husband was in Army Intelligence and when he was getting ready to head to Vietnam his commanding officer told him to go to the PX and pick out some insignia, other than Intelligence...(obviously!). I remember that we had a long discussion about whether he should be a Chaplin ("but what if someone wants to go to confession!!!) or a Doctor (too scarey!). I think he finally got the insignia of an engineer (he could'nt change a light bulb)!

but not one Alabama guard member is so low he will lie about Bush being in Alabama.

Is it good or sad that the national guard vets have higher standards than some vietnam vets?

24. The truth is always in the anecdotes
And it was so telling last January when all Scott McCleland could come up with was, "The president recalls being there."

OK, then let our great have-a-beer-with pal reminisce about the corner bar every Tuesday night with his three regular drinking buddies, who now come forward to verify. Or the weekly haircuts with the military barber who intentionally butchered everyone's name, as well as scalp.

No such thing because he wasn't there.

27. Why do you ask...ROFL! you expect "average voter" to parse this out?
Coming home...with kids and wife..trying to put food on table and do homework and tend to lawn, broken faucets and the rest of "life's chores"

Who would folks rather believe? Folks who say the system is bad a Jesus is good, and send your kids to me..because you are noble, hard working people and the gubment is taking your money away from you with FICA/Medicare add on?

Because you are "single" you don't get what's going on out there in "heartland America." And sadly our Dem Party doesn't get it either, except on "paper."

If you and your wife are working 4 jobs to make ends meet are you going to listen to Kerry or Bush? You know 9/11 was an attack (if you are them, and you know you are paying too much in taxes).

How does Kerry speak to the "others" who have families out there? When Bush is hitting their "hot buttons" that it's the "Gubment" eating up their wages and their kids are threatened by "Perverts and Planned Parenthood?"

These are the people that we "intellectual wonks" in the Dem Party don't want to hear from.

I'm proud that on DU...we have enough diversity from all spectrums of life that this isn't a factor..because we are all in this boat together, here.

But...how can you recruit...when you are faced with those odds and your candidate appears to folks as John Kerry?
