Splintering Bush's base- Catholics are also Christians
All indications have been that a big part of Bush's strategy has been to shore-up and protect his base. Kerry being Catholic, and an apparently practicing one (who, unlike Bush, actually attends services weekly ) has made this difficult for him.
Note the dire need to push the marriage amendment questions and get some Bishops to say they'll deny Kerry communion for supporting women's choice.
I'll bet their internal polling shows they have had to do this.
Anyone have anecdotes to support this view?

1. Most of the 'Christians' that Bush panders to...
...don't think Catholics are actually Christian. They think the Pope is the antichrist and all the rest of that Birchian black helicopter nonsense.

4. "One, holy, catholic, and apostolic church"
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 03:17 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
Then they should pay attention to what they preach.

Christians of most denominations, including most Protestants, affirm their faith in "one holy catholic and apostolic Church." For Protestants, most of whom consider themselves to be spiritual descendents (category 2, above), this affirmation refers to their belief in the ultimate unity of all churches under one God and one Saviour, rather than in one visibly unified church, i.e. the ideal meaning given above. In this usage catholic is usually written with a minuscule "c".

12. I was a born-again once, and trust me-- Baptists are no friends of
Catholics. My church used to pass out little pamplets that reinforced the fact that Catholics were going to hell for praying to humans (saints) and for believing that Mary (mother of Jesus) was sinless -- pretty much making her equal to God.

2. Actually, My Friend
If you keep a real fundamentalist talking long enough, you will be told Catholics are not Christians, but idolators, and the enemies of true Christianity. Most people raised Catholic are well aware of the hostility directed at their faith by such Protestant extremists....

3. No doubt shrub will get some of the Catholic vote, but not all!
I don't have any links to reference, but Catholics are people too. Shrub gets most of the single issue voters, Dems get those who think and feel.

Few people agree with either candidate on everything. Every voter should make a list of positives and negatives on every candidate. The candidate with the most positives gets your vote. Far too many Pubs would never do that.

5. Kerry's share of the Catholic vote will be similar...
...to Gore's -- a solid Democratic majority.

Polling indicates there's virtually no movement.

7. Well, they think all Catholics are cultists, so that should answer you.
I remember the first time I heard that Baptists believe Catholics all belong to a cult, I about croaked! But I lived in Greenville, SC, and now in Ga. It's true, they do!

8. My mom (who voted *) said she would never not vote for a Catholic.
The relatives in Wisconsin are quite similar. I can't imagine them voting for a "holy-roller" over a Catholic. No way, no how.

9. People on the right are so gullible, so willing to

believe anything another RWer tells them. It never ceases to amaze me.

I loathe Rove and his smarmy efforts to recruit Catholics for the Bush* camp. The fact that Dubya spoke at Bob Jones (where they hold very anti-Catholic views) shows he doesn't give a damn about Catholics.

I learned today (from a DU post, of course!) that there's a site called Catholics for Kerry -- and then found out there are at least two sites, two independent efforts. One's a .net site, one a .org site. At least one site sells bumper stickers. . .

Wouldn't it be cool if lots of "Catholics for Kerry" bumper stickers started being seen across the country?

11. 75% Catholics polled AGAINST bishops....
I can't direct you to this poll it was, I think, over a month ago.....but my memory of the issue is excellent. A few weeks ago a couple of Catholic bishops made a big announcement of the fact that they would deny Kerry communion for his support of a woman's right to choose. 75% of Catholics polled on the matter said the bishops were wrong to make such a statement . I think this is ample testimony to the notion that Americans of all faiths are far more sophisticated and far more capable of nuanced thinking than that stinking pea brained media machine out there gives them credit for.

14. This 'Catholics are a Cult' thing is weirding me out!
I never heard this before, but I guess I was a naive Catholic.
I also, as mentioned above, did see that poll where 75% of Catholics thought it was wrong to deny Kerry communion.
