MSNBC Is Letting W Off The Hook.
They are claiming that he condemned the SBL's ad. He clearly did not.

Bush calls for halt to Swift Boat vets' ads

<SNIP>
CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush says a veterans’ group should stop television ads criticizing John Kerry’s war record.

The president's criticism of the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth came as Bush denounced all TV ads by outside groups attacking both Kerry and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts.

“I think they’re bad for the system,” he said.

When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."

They are giving this liar another pass! Where are the "he's parsing his every word" claims that were bellowed immediately after Clinton statements of this sort? Ya know I have a funny feeling that the "liberal" media will suddenly find it's spine when/if Kerry is inaugurated.

1. Yeah that's a firm response
Basically he means MoveOn. Come should stop doing their ads; I doubt he has much of a problem with the swift boat vets.

3. So when the ads don't stop
this proves they are out of Bush's control. That certainly makes sense.

At least this really dampens the fun they were going to have at the Convention. I wonder how much swift boat sludge they will salvage for the occasional snide remark offstage. The more they have to stick to the issues where are bombing badly the better.

The only line I long to hear from GOP Convention reporting. "But behind the scenes the mood is grim among party professionals with some wishing for a substitute for Cheney, others that Bush was a better speaker or wish that he had not have burned so many bridges to the middle when the tax cut ploy faltered and the Iraq War floundered."

No joy in Mudville.

4. Bush can talk all he wants about eliminating
interest group ads but as long as they follow the guidelines set out by the FEC they are constitutionally protected free speech. As is the smearboat ad. But the request to denounce goes to a moral issue about falsehood and smears. A Bush or Kerry pronouncement of condemnation will not and should not have any actual effect on whether the ads run or not. MSNBC is being overly cute here but other media seem to be running it differently.

5. Lets all Wait

I hope that Chris Matthews literally plays HARDBALL tonight...

Matthews needs to be honest about the genrality of THAT comment...it really isnt what Kerry camp asked for and Bush want to draw this out as long as he can because SHRUB has NADA to offer for the next four years.

6. Jeebus Creebus, it's the exact SAME response
When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."

How is that different from the same--quite nonsensical--response he (or at least his mouthpiece Scottie) has had all along: "we should end all these 527 ads." It's NOT a disavowal of that ad, it's the same effing thing he's BEEN saying.

Godsake, aren't these media nitwits responsible for having even an iota of intellect somewhere somehow sometime? And why don't they confront him on the implications of getting rid of all 527 ads? Which is something he'd get all twisted in knots trying to explain.
