In WW1, George's grandfather lied about his medals, and was thorougly humiliated for the rest of his life.

He claimed to have received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Victoria Cross, and the Cross of the Legion of Honor.

Four weeks after this news was reported in the U.S. press, the following notice written by HIS MOTHER appeared in a newspaper:

Remember, he was also punished by the US government for his continued dealings with Nazis long after 1941 (up until at least 1949, IIRC). In fact, his son George (Dubya's daddy) enlisted in WWII to draw attention away from the fact that Prescott had a continuing business relationship with the Third Reich LOOOOONG after December 8, 1941, when the US declared war on Germany.

So not only is he a liar about his military awards, he's also a Nazi collaborator. I wonder how this would fly with the WWII-era vets?

batted an incoming shell away with a bolo knife is the biggest clue, followed quickly by his claiming to have batted the shell away while escorting the commanders of American, British, and French forces on an inspection tour.

But how did this farcical story end up in the newspaper? Did old Mom and Dad Bush leak this to the papers? If so, how stupid were they?
