Democratic Mayor in Ohio endorses Chimpy
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 05:28 PM by BrentTaylor
Why do democrats always do this type of sh-t. We probably could look all over this country and wouldn't find a Repuke mayor to do this.

"The mayor of a Democratic stronghold in Ohio known for its steel industry job losses endorsed the Republican president on Monday.

George M. McKelvey, a Democrat in his second term, said he had no intention of becoming a Republican but might accept an invitation from Ohio Republicans to attend the Republican National Convention in New York.

In the 2000 presidential election, Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites), the Democratic nominee, received 69,212 votes to 40,460 for Bush in Mahoning County, which includes Youngstown. Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 5-1 ratio, according to the Mahoning County Board of Elections,

"What has our community received in return for the past loyal support for Democratic presidential candidates? Dare I speak the answer? Nothing," McKelvey said.

McKelvey said his decision came after he had gotten to know Bush. He and his wife were guests of Bush at the White House last May, after the president promoted community health centers during a visit to Youngstown, Ohio's eighth largest city with about 79,000 residents. "

Poor George McKelvey... he's feeling all alone out there.

Let's send him a link to DU, and let him know that he's not alone! His political future is in more jeopardy if he supports Bush over Kerry.. let him know!!

McKelvey Calls White House Visit ‘Life Altering’

Excerpt:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Mayor George McKelvey doesn’t know why he was invited to dinner by President Bush, but described the occasion as successful, “humbling” and a “life-altering experience.”

But leading Democrats in the Mahoning Valley find the whole episode amusing, a lesson in Electoral College politics and how the “poaching” game is played.

<snip>

Before the dinner, McKelvey told WFMJ’s Black he was “as curious as the next person as to why George McKelvey is sitting next to President Bush in the White House. I don’t know the answer to that. I will know after the meeting is over, but I do not know now. It could be as simple as the fact of the matter that he has grown to like me as a person, and is extending the hand of friendship. Or it could be to the other end of the spectrum, that it is the beginning of a process where they would like me to be a part of something involving the president.”

<snip>

At the end of the evening, McKelvey said he received a private tour of the Oval Office, and the two showed each other pictures of their children, according to the reports. The mayor described his visit to the White House as “a life-altering experience.”

Democratic Party activists say the president was “poaching” and using McKelvey in hopes of taking votes away from John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic Party nominee. “The only thing that George Bush has really given the Mahoning Valley is a couple of dinners and a visit to the White House,” quipped state Sen. Robert Hagan, D-33, Youngstown.

18. Bush showed him pictures, alright. Pics of him with a callgirl, probably.
Or some other piece of blackmail. That's what the Bushes have been doing for decades.

Even GOP congressmen would complain that Bush was blackmailing them to vote for Nixon's legislation back in the late 60s.

19. What an arrogant fool, to think the dinner was because Bush "likes"
him, possibly.

I'm sorry to say that Youngstown is in a very depressed part of Ohio but the silver lining is that this mayor does not represent many votes.

20. Dems
should kick these people out of the party.

McCaulife or someone should make it clear that any "DEm" that endorses Bush is no longer considered a democrat.

The interesting this is this time, while we may hear of various dem lawmakers endorsing the Chimp, we'll almost definetely have a very low rate of defection among democratic voters to Bush. There will be more republicans switching to Kerry than the other way around.

29. I think the Ohio Dems have officially written off Youngstown
At one time Ohio often touted its "Big Eight" cities -- Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Youngstown and Canton. More recently, the mayors of all of the cities, save Youngstown and Canton, have been meeting up to discuss strategies for picking the state up out of the ashbin. Of course, the mayors of the six largest Ohio cities are Democrats. Canton's mayor is currently a Repug. And Youngstown's mayor, though Democratic, has now officially shown himself to be a DINO. It could just be coincidence, but neither Canton nor Youngstown has seen anything but decline over the last 3 decades. Go figure.

And bush met his price.

And the voters will let McKelvey know if they approve or disapprove. Especially now that the steel workers support Kerry after bush's flip-flop on them. :)
