but tonight's Hardball is merely an examination of the other side of the coin, if you will.

It's not anti-Kerry - he has people on who a) are defending him and B) who are criticizing him.

It's balance, people - live with it. Unless of course you think "Bush sucks 24/7" should be on all the time.

Not that I'd mind... :)

34. I do too. And for all those who've been praising Pat Buchanan...
tune in. Get a dose of what those of us who grew up during the Nixon administration saw. He is a HUGE ASSHOLE who is still defending Nixon--I wish someone would replay his culture wars speech for all his new fans.

Tweetie must also feel a great deal of guilt about ducking Vietnam. I think that's what is prompting part of this media attack against Kerry--they feel the same need as Bush does to bring Kerry down to their level. Tweetie keeps trying to make it seem like it was no big deal for Kerry to speak out against the war, that because he was in Mass. it was easy for him. MY GOD, is he an idiot?! Has he been paying attention to what the Nixon slugs did to Kerry.

The media are more comfortable with the jockstrap snapping Bush who gives them humiliating nicknames, but lets them be part of the popular crowd, than they are with Kerry who is authentic--who stood up for something, who put his life on the line. They trivialize everything. What a bunch of cheap hacks.

I think some of these guys protest too much. They creep me out. Who knows what they have buried within themselves. It's almost a visceral reaction to him and their main source of complaint is his statement to Congress all those years ago. War crimes DID happen and still do. Perhaps some of these guys know more about them than they want to admit. Don't know that for a fact--but it has that feel to it for me.

talk about a self inflicted wound in the context Pat tried to lay down. Make Kerry look bumbling rather than heroic. (I know I know, it isn't bumbling to get a wound that way, I can't understand why the right thinks it is okay to question how one gets a WAR WOUND?)

Except she wasn't swift (forgive me, couldn't resist) enough to pull it off and got caught in own web of lies.

58. Just so we don't forget who Pat really is...from his speech in '92

"Friends, this is radical feminism. The agenda Clinton & Clinton would impose on America--abortion on demand, a litmus test for the Supreme Court, homosexual rights, discrimination against religious schools, women in combat--that's change, all right. But it is not the kind of change America wants. It is not the kind of change America needs. And it is not the kind of change we can tolerate in a nation that we still call God's country...

There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton & Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side. And so, we have to come home, and stand beside him."

90. I would never mistake Buchanan as being a friend...
& he is a chickenhawk...

& he is bigoted on moral issues because of his religious beliefs.

But he is not anti-Semetic. He has been at war with the Neo-Cons, as have been many old school conservatives. Unfortunately, they have been smeared as Anti-Semetic. That is the Neo-Cons tactic: disagree with their wars of aggression, & dare mention Perle, Wolfowitz, & Kristol, & get smeared. There have been really nasty things going on with National Review & Weekly Standard doing a real hatchet job.

And about him punching out someone..I have heard him discuss this, & admits he was an ass.

I am not trying to defend Buchanan, but I respect your well-thought out posts, & I think sometimes are more complex than we see.

59. More from Dick
Bizarre that things have festered for 30 years and coming out under the banner of patriotism. Anger has fuzzed me out-that being anti-war is 'helping the enemy'-wasn't the atrocities doing it? Has anyone investigated Tonkin Gulf?

Apologizing for calling Buchanan a moral thug-said he had him confused with Novak!

60. You know...
apparently the bushies approached Chris about Michele Malkin or something because Chris said he went back and watched the tape 12 times. Hmmmm.

p.s. Cavet apologized to Pat because he called him a thug but he meant that for Novak. hehehe!!

75. She's an idiot.
Their party isn't going to shut anyone out because their views don't toe the party line?

And how many times has she been locked out (literally) of her own party platform meetings because she's pro-choice? Oh, but now she's telling Matthews that she doesn't exactly consider herself pro-choice.

And they accuse Kerry of wanting to havev it both ways!

77. Kay, one of the many stars of the book "Bush's Brain"
Kay Bailey Hutchinson, newly elected to the U.S. Senate, was indicted by a Travis County grand jury in September 1993 on charges she misused her office as state treasurer. Specifically, prosecutors said workers on her payroll made campaign fund-raising calls on state time and used a state computer to keep track of the contributions.

Rove's testimony, however, reinforced the thesis: the district attorney was a publicity-hungry politico. The case never went to trial. The judge dismissed evidence important to the prosecutors, the district attorney dropped the case, and Hutchinson took her place in the U.S. Senate.

"They mounted a political defense," said Earle. "They wanted to portray the entire effort as a political prosecution. They played that defense both in the courtroom and outside. Their courtroom tactics and their public relation tactics were the same."

In the political endnote, the state Republican party issued a news release saying the district attorney's time would be better spent investigating Ann Richards. Whatever else Rove was doing, he never lost sight of the primary goal: putting George W. Bush in office. Richards was an obstacle; Richards was the enemy. The news release came two months before Bush formally announced his candidacy and was written by Karen Hughes, who eventually was to join Rove on the Bush political team.

70. Douglas Brinkley was terrific
Emphasizing it's all attack dog August tactics, no basis in truth. He pointed out that a schrapnel in the arm is only inches away from hitting you in the eye and blinding you, that's what happens in war.

Brinkley said 9 of the 10 men in Kerry's boat support him tremendously, and the 10th is a South Carolina conservative who has a beef with Kerry after being chewed out for excessive firing in Vietnam.

Matthews started the show questioning Kerry's anti-war statements after returning from Vietnam, but quickly turned on Buchanon when he brought up the Cambodia garbage and later tried to defend Malkin."Was Kerry heroic? Did he show heroism?," Matthews asked. He turned and asked the question to Brinkley when jackass Buchanon was unresponsive. So telling that people like Dole and Buchanon have obviously been enlisted in fueling this story with high octane crap.

Matthews is clearly livid at some of this, telling Buchanon he gave Malkin 12 chances to amend her self-inflicted claim.

Until last week I was away from the internet for a month, and perhaps this has been discussed on DU, but I'm reminded Karl Rove supposedly theorizes you attack an opponent at his strength. I'm wondering if that's the theory behind this seemingly masochistic attack, from the Republican standpoint.

I was waiting to read what Brinkely said about Kerry's being a "hero" as per tweety's question..Did he have something sane to say?

79. Something along the lines of "definitely"
Brinkley stood up for Kerry with every sentence, saying he faced enemy fire. He repeated the August idiocy theme at least twice.

The conversation and themes got so heated and emotional that Brinkley was obviously sweating above his upper lip and Matthews had a much more frantic look than normal, cutting off Buchanon several times.

There also was an elderly guy who wrote a book on Vietnam. I don't believe anyone else in this thread mentioned him. He was decidedly pro-Kerry, saying Kerry concluded very early it was an unwinnable war, with the enemy willing to concede as many losses as necessary, but the angered vets simply could not accept that we would not win the war, and are still attacking Kerry to this day.

85. I saw that, and Dick Cavett is still plenty sharp
I even enjoyed it when he remembered he thought John O'Neill might chide Kerry for his pronunciation of "ask" and "task."

For the bulk of this year I thought Buchanon and even Scarborough, especially during primary night coverage, were fair and sometimes astute in their analysis. As November nears I guess every righty becomes a flailing pit bull.

83. Republicans threatened to blacklist, so Matthews got on his knees to beg
Please, don't blacklist me, I promise to only read talking points from the Bush campaign from now on. No more presenting both sides.

Remember what happened to Bill Maher when he dared to question Bush after 9/11? He lost his show.

88. Bingo! You Hit the Nail On the Head, Democat
The GOP threat to blacklist Matthews during their Convention paid off.

Matthews drew back his fangs.

As I keep saying, if the Democrats would in block announce that they are boycotting FoxNews, it would send a righteous message to the public and sober the rest of the media.

Ever seen Hillary on with Bill O'Racist? Never. She's smart. The rest of the Party should follow suit.
