The Kerry/Bush campaigns... a football analogy.
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 09:01 AM by Flubadubya
Think of it as two teams going out to play a game of football. One team (Kerry) knows the rules of the game and plays by them in good faith. The other team (Bush) couldn't care less about the rules of the game... they are out to win at any cost and will cheat and play dirty to achieve their "victory". Worst of all, on the sidelines there you've got a referee (the media) who always sides with the cheating team. On top of that, in the stadium you've got half (or more) of the spectators who don't know Jack about football and believe whatever the referees say.

In a dirty, rigged, imbecilic game like that how can you win?

1. You "win" with a better athlete or candidate
our side has the better candidate

2. In such a "toxic" political environment...
the question is, "Is our best (Kerry) good enough?" I don't want to appear pessimistic or defeatist, but, realistically, Kerry has the fight of his life on his hands. Another question is, "Does Kerry continue to fight admirably and honorably or will he be forced to give up principle and get down in the dirt with the pond scum who are out to destroy him?"

I just don't know what it's going to take, but I do believe that the "Age of Civility and Fair-Mindedness" in this country is finished... and that is quite sad.

3. there was no age of civility in American politics
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 09:22 AM by Hamlette
the difference now is the media...before you could run a nasty ad and some people saw it, now the nastier the ad the more coverage it gets on cable news.

Rigging the refs in nothing new either, newspapers have been notoriously slanted. In the past however, they did still print the news. Again, cable news is Monica/Gary Condit/Swift Boat non stop.

We will have to do with cable news what we did with newspapers, get our own.

(edited for spelling)

4. You have your point...
but I have been around since Harry Truman and I have seen some ugly campaigns, but you have to admit this is the very worst of the worst. There is hardly any civility left between the members of congress... they more outwardly show their hostility toward one another than they used to. No, politics has never been a "gracious" activity, but nor has it ever been this disgusingly nasty, mean-spirited, and one-sided.

Evidently we do need our own TV cable company if we ever hope to offset the disgraceful propaganda that passes for "news" on ANY of the channels today, bot network and cable.
