"Is this another skeleton in the Democratic closet that Barack Obama must struggle to overcome?"
David Gregory on Edwards: "Is this another skeleton in the Democratic closet that Barack Obama must struggle to overcome?"

On the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Race for the White House, host David Gregory baselessly suggested that former Sen. John Edwards' (D-NC) disclosure of an extramarital affair has some relevance to Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Gregory opened the show by saying, "Tonight, more on Edwards and the fallout from his admission today about a sexual affair: Is this another skeleton in the Democratic closet that Barack Obama must struggle to overcome?" Gregory also said that, "now, questions about his future abound in the party and whether this creates another shadow over Barack Obama as he gets ready for the conventions."

From the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Race for the White House:

GREGORY: Tonight: the Edwards affair. He admits an extramarital affair dating back to 2006, telling ABC News, wife Elizabeth learned of it that year. He lied repeatedly to cover it up as a presidential candidate. And now, questions about his future abound in the party and whether this creates another shadow over Barack Obama as he gets ready for the conventions. All of this, as the race for the White House rolls on.

<...>

GREGORY: Welcome to Race for the White House on a busy Friday. I'm David Gregory -- happy to have you here. It's your stop for the fast pace, the bottom line, and every point of view in the room. Tonight, more on Edwards and the fallout from his admission today about a sexual affair: Is this another skeleton in the Democratic closet that Barack Obama must struggle to overcome? Will Edwards appear at the Democratic convention? All of that ahead.

1. Edward's affair has NOTHING to do with Obama
but I see folks in the media are trying to link the two...

That was pure David Gregory. He's odious.

3. Guilt by association, again? This is so 'yesterday', and the day before.
Gregory is tiresome, partisan, and I hope his show FAILS EPICALLY!

6. Gregory isn't the only media whore
flogging this particular horse. Last night Anderson Cooper solemnly intoned that that Edwards' affair will "hurt the Democratic party." Can you imagine the lengths he was going to to stiffle a big, hearty laugh? Whores all.

19. In August 2004 the corpmedia spent 10 days trumpeting the McGreevey story.
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 12:14 PM by blm
And too many Dems forget about that in their haste to blame Kerry for the media's complicit focus on anti-Dem stories.

The corpmedia KNOWS plenty of Dems (helped by the corpoDem 'strategist' set) will buy THEIR version of the campaign post election day - just as they did after 2000, 2002, and 2004, and will blame the Dem candidates.

7. No, but McCain might!
The longer this goes, the more chance the exposure of McCain doing the same thing is going to start to haunt the repubs. They better be praying this story goes off the screen really quick.

It would political suicide for McCain to dwell on this.

15. Glad you did that..
I am going to find it and bump it back up :) This is NOT good for the republicons at all. I was watching the talking heads yesterday, and listening to those right sided hell hounds and thinking to myself "how deep is that hole you are digging for yourselves"

They were going on and on about fidelity etc. All statements coming back to haunt them next week!

8. "Will Edwards appear at the Democratic convention?"
Jesus Fucking Christ, the media we have in this country. Has there been any indication that Edwards would be speaking since his revelation?

The natural assumption would be no, and the only reason to bring it up is to do exactly what Gregory is lamenting for Barack: having to deal with the "skeleton." One more example of that "Lib'rul" media...

this has nothing to do with Obama other than the fact both are from the same political party. I hate when the media tries to pull straws from this shit!:argh:

11. it was interesting to see how the Republican strategists reacted to this yesterday
Some wouldn't even take the bait- the Republican strategist Susan reiternated a couple of times on Race for the white house that it didn't mean anything for the Democratic party ,even though Gregory kept PRESSING her. The repuke guy of course had to get in his dig about how he always thought Edwards was "swarmy". Christ, even Brad Blakeman, who I find the scummiest of the scum, didn't even go there yesterday and just said that it was a personal tragedy for the family. Lars Larson and several others of course had to use it to vent about how they thought Edwards was a sleezy trial lawyer- another Republican yesterday was fucking intoning to David Shuster "And I'm sure that you guys will be mentioning this in your lead up to the convention...it will be a test for you." Yeah, liberal media card my ass, as if the Democratic party did not go through this with Spitzer and Clinton. Other Republicans have not gone there though, and I appreciated that. I knew that David Gregory would because he is slime.

14. By that logic John Sidney McZombie III would be buried in skeletons.
And he's got enough to handle with his main affair with Cindy whom he married, and the others that were soft pedaled by his media pets.

I was starting to think I'd been unfair about Gregory, when he was joshing with Jon on THe Daily Show the other night, but no-- he's still working for that great friend of Charles Keating, little old Senator John Sidney McCrypt III, with 7 homes, $520 shoes, a net worth of $40 million and an heiress wife with $100 million of her own.

Why does this cast ANY shadow over Obama??? better yet, why does anyone perceive it does...McCain had his own affair and HE's the ONE RUNNING....Obama wasn't involved in this, it happened years ago, and he gave the perfect response to the whole affair yesterday.....I'm sure he's not going to say another thing about it, because it has ZERO to do with him...They might want to be careful how much they say this has to do with Obama...might not be so good for their own candidate....(shaking my head at the stupidity once again)...wb

It's as though David Gregory read a list of all the problems with cable news and made it his personal mission to incorporate all of them into a single show.

23. No, Edawrds has little connection to Obama
In fact, it is his Trippi type attacks on Obama that have made some believe that Obams, who once was a community organizer was "corporate", not "progressive like him" - in spite of early endorsements from people like Leahy and Kennedy.

Edwards is not a Democratic official - he never came close to Clinton's position. Would Huckabee having an affair hurt McCain?

25. David Gregory is a moron!
Thankfully, most of us watched the Opening of the Olympics and skipped the orgiastic coverage of the Edwards affair by the cable news channels.

Put Hillary on the ticket. We know her. There are no surprises with her. Bill is Bill, and even a new scandal on his part will come as no surprise. And... Hillary is who Obama needs as Veep, to take the lowest of the low roads, to destroy the GOP machine. Obama has yet to go to the jugular, while Hillary can do it with her eyes closed. Let's win this thing, and we will worry about the rest later.

but I guess I SHOULD believe it. I turned to Faux to see how THEY were covering it, and they continually showed footage of Edwards and Obama together on the day he endorsed Obama. Typical.
