A one shot satirical post was thrown out late last night presenting a facially false smear of the type Republicans specialize in, though in this case directed against Laura Bush. (The virtue of the candidate's wife is the quintessential American political whisper campaign, second only to insinuating that a candidate is black.)
A lot of DUers enjoyed the infamous post at first. The folks who replied approvingly made a lot of sex jokes that I don't care for, but I don't own the board. Either way, they seemed to be having a good time.
Today a series of people decided that the post was somehow helping get Bush elected. Some of them did the right thing and alerted the post. But the mods, for whatever reason, declined to lock or move the post.
And that was the end of it, right? Goodness, no! Rather than moving on some folks spent the day spamming and kicking this thing they honestly think helps Bush. Funny how that works, eh? It was a little DU riot to show the mods who's boss, but instead of raging out at the mods (the only sensible villains of the piece) DUers kept posting and posting and posting references to precisely the story to which they claimed to object, turning a non-smear into a real smear.
Soon almost everyone on DU had heard *something* about Laura Bush being a prostitute, though most had not read the original post that stated right up front that it was a made-up story.
So the combined efforts of a lot of heroes saved DU from the post nobody would have read, turned a joke-smear into a real smear and spammed the board in a back-handed effort to show up the mods.
A great day to be a Democrat!
