I have a family member that is trying to use scripture to justify being anti-Kerry. Of course, they are cherry picked. I know they have been posted on here before. Can anyone help me out?

2. The letter below to Dr. Laura that has been circulating might be helpful
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 08:35 PM by jjmalonejr
Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear prescription glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

8. My smartass answer is "The Bible" but

no doubt you want something more specific.

Is this something that's been e-mailed around? If so, Snopes is good about refuting or corroborating e-mails.

Of course, I'm sure you know that you can't refute something that's in the Bible by saying it isn't there if it is, or by saying it's not true to someone who believes in a literal interpretation, but you can talk about other interpretations of the verses. The right, as you say, cherry picks the verses they use.

A good comeback would be to do some cherry picking of our own. It would be a good DU project.

9. Ok, here are a couple
Judge not, that ye be not judged. Fo with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine eye.
Or how wilt thow say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou Hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brothers eye.
Matthew 7, vs 1-5

A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
Matthew 12, vs 35

If you will let me know what types of biblical verses are being thrown at you, I will help you. Jesus was pretty cool and had a lot of great things to say. I would dare to say that most of the quotes used against you either came from the Old Testament or from Paul.

Repugs love the Old Testament. The law of Moses and the old eye for an eye thing.
Liberals love the New Testament. Jesus teaching kindness, forgiveness and outfoxing the bad guys of those days.

12. Ever notice how rare it is for a right wing Christian to quote Christ?
They're always coming up with Old Testament fire and brimstone citations. Never anything from the Sermon on the Mount.

13. All you really need is to go to Matthew Chap. 5 to shut the RW nuts up.
They don't live by these words and these are the words of Christ. They completely ignore all of his message here.
