WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a fact sheet from Kerry-Edwards 2004:
News from across the Nation on Bush's Swift Smear Squad's Lies
1) The St. Petersburg Times called this smear campaign "An ugly attack"
The latest attack from a Republican-backed political committee seeking to discredit Kerry's Vietnam service is dishonest and indecent. This isn't the first time that such gutter tactics have been directed at a political opponent of George W. Bush ... the anti-Kerry ad evoked from Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain is a reminder of the pattern here. Four years ago, McCain was campaigning against Bush for the Republican presidential nomination only to see Bush appear on a South Carolina stage with a discredited former Green Beret who accused McCain of "stabbing veterans in the back." Other supposedly independent groups spread even more despicable rumors about McCain, who spent 5 1/2 years in a Hanoi prison. (St. Petersburg Times, 8/10/04)
2) The Palm Beach Post (Editorial) cites "This is the way Bushes do politics"
(The Palm Beach Post (Editorial): "The Bushes' Stain-Free Smears" 8/10/04)
3) The Oregonian says "Now This Gets Nasty"
Last week, McCain called the attack on his fellow Vietnam veteran "dishonest and dishonorable" and called on President Bush to disavow it. Bush should. Mud is adhesive, all right, but those who launch smears must beware the blow-back. Anyone who stands to benefit, even remotely, shouldn't watch silently as the mud flies by.
4) Charleston Gazette calls these attacks "Ugly"
