Why not? Is there suddenly a shortage of Republican liars? Consider, for example, a certain lying former senator from Kansas, who said on national television that two of Kerry's Purple Hearts came on the same day, which is not the case unless December 2, is the same date as February 20 or March 13, and that Kerry "never bled," which isn't how the people who were there at the time recall it.

You know, I think Viagra really is a wonder drug: it seems to have made Bob Dole an even bigger prick than he used to be.

Dole has blown whatever respectability he was able to build in his retirement. He was an attack dog for most of his career, but I always respected him. He was not an idealogue. The '96 campaign was the cleanest and nicest one in my lifetime. It was also probably the last decent campaign.

Dole has relinquished any claim to respectability by his comments this week. It's disappointing, because I *DO* like to think there are some honorable republicans.

Today Bob Dole suggested that one or more of John Kerry's Purple Hearts may have been fraudulent in some way because they were for "superficial wounds."

Dole knows better.

In a 1988 campaign-trail autobiography, here's how Dole described the incident that earned him his first Purple Heart: "As we approached the enemy, there was a brief exchange of gunfire. I took a grenade in hand, pulled the pin, and tossed it in the direction of the farmhouse. It wasn't a very good pitch (remember, I was used to catching passes, not throwing them). In the darkness, the grenade must have struck a tree and bounced off. It exploded nearby, sending a sliver of metal into my leg--the sort of injury the Army patched up with Mercurochrome and a Purple Heart."
