Help! How do I vote in this election??!!
I just realized how thoroughly screwed my husband and I *might* be for voting in this election. Here's what it looks like is going to happen:

1. I live in state 1 and am registered to vote here, but we are selling our house.

2. On 9/29 we move out of state 1, and drive down to state 2 where we will live in corporate housing temporarily until late October. We will not permanently be residing in state 2 so we will not be getting new drivers licenses.

3. Around 10/29 we will be moving out of corporate housing in state 2 to our new home in VERY nearby state 3.

Because we will not be permanent residents of state 2 I don't see how we can register to vote there. (Getting a drivers license for 30 days seems extreme.) But because we will not become permanent residents of state 3 until just a few days before the election I don't see how we can register to vote there.

Can we vote via absentee ballot in state 1 still?

What should/can we do? I simply cannot NOT vote in this election. That's just not an option.

Thanks!

1. you need to check with the officials in the relevant states.
I believe each state or district has its own rules.

If you have not had the good fortune to sell your house in state 1 by the time of the election I think you can still vote there (by absentee ballot).

3. The house will be sold by the time of the election...
In fact the house will be sold the day we move, it's our closing day.

We will still have our licenses from state 1, and our "home" address on them the day of the election, because we will not permanently be in a new home until just before then.

I was thinking that the most viable option is to vote in State 1 via absentee ballot or early voting.

2. Can you still get an absentee or early ballot?
If you won't be in state, you have a compelling need for one or the other. That would surely be a valid reason to request one.

4. Register to vote in state 2 as soon as you get in
Most states have October 4 as the cut off, but definitely check.

It does not matter if it is corporate housing. You can register wherever you live - you do not need to be a permanent resident (i.e., students can vote in their college town).

5. Which state has the closest statistics?
I think you have a rare opportunity, depending on where you are going, to influence things. I would say keep the registration in Virginia and vote here. The state is just barely for Bush now.

Wouldn't it be great if you could help pull Virginia over to Kerry?

I'm all mixed up this morning, I just suggested Underpants move out of Richmond. He should stay there!
