Gallup Daily: Obama at 46%, McCain at 43%

Obama returns to slight 3-point leadUSA Election 2008 Gallup Daily Americas Northern America PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama has returned to a slight three percentage point lead over John McCain in Gallup Poll Daily tracking for Aug. 15-17, with Obama at 46% and McCain at 43% among registered voters.

The current position of the race is representative of the overall average positioning of the two candidates so far this summer. Although McCain moved closer to Obama in the last three reports of Gallup's tracking, he was not able to sustain this tied position, and the bottom line is that the race appears to have once again returned to just about where it has been on average over the summer. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)

Campaign activity from this point forward will begin to intensify, with the pending announcement of Obama's vice-presidential choice, the Democratic convention, McCain's own announcement of his vice president, and the Republican convention. The degree to which all of these events will affect voter preferences in the presidential race could go a long way towards determining the eventual winner of the election in November. -- Frank Newport

4. Enough of these daily tracking polls
they're worthless. State polls provide a much better idea of who is actually doing better. Looking at these national tracking polls, you'd think the race was tied. Looking at it state by state, it's obvious that Obama has a slight lead.

Hey, I said the other night that McCain might jump by 3 points after the forum, and was totally wrong, and in fact, it looks like the opposite turned out to be true. So, therefore, McCain will win the election in a landslide.

6. LAst weekend was anomolous to the trend
IT always seems to tighten up mid-late week, then widens again.

It didn't do that last week.

11. WHEW! I was scared about McCain's number yesterday at 45%, I thought
Gallup was going to show him BEATING Obama today so the media could crow about it.

12. Obama always seems to pick up support over the weekends. I believe
that's because they're only reaching the elderly during the weekdays.
